Jimmy Greaves at White Hart Lane today

Post by ClaretTony » Fri Mar 31, 2017 10:32 pm

So sad to see that the best goalscorer I ever saw is now confined to a wheelchair but good to see that today he was finally able to get back to White Hart Lane. All I can say is that with the record he had against us I'm glad he's not playing tomorrow.

Superbly talented player who I had the opportunity to meet in 1986, what a superb bloke he was too.

I'd rather he was playing than the likes of Eriksen and Alli, especially if he's confined to a wheelchair.

I was rather suggesting the Greaves of the 1960s

Mr.Grieves (Greaves?)was also the groundsman at Gawthorpe in the 60's, but not the same one.

Really? if you've got any info on him, Dave Thomas is currently writing a book. I used to play out a bit with his son 'Jimmy' as he was a kid in the neighbourhood. As far as I know, he was blinded in a tractor accident and had to move from the bungalow and then lived with his black Alsatian guide dog. I once saw his son come off his Lambretta. I thought he was a tough man, so the doorman story rings true.

How sad does Jimmy look in those clips?
Nothing like the jack in the box of my youthful memories, and nothing like the crackerjack funny man from Saint and Greavsie.
But you can't take away memories, and they are ones of the finest goalscorer in English football imo.

Met and spoke with him at a book signing in Milton Keynes about 10 years ago.

I asked him if I could shake the hand of England's greatest ever goalscorer and he duly obliged.

He once described his journey with Spurs as they came to play us at the Turf and as they did back then came over the old A56 past the Waggoners and looking down at Burnley shrouded in mist/smog with factory chimneys poking up through the cloud as like a scene from Brigadoon, great player, great goalscorer and a genuinely funny guy.

Really sad to see the great Jimmy Greaves in his present situation. One of the English games greatest goal scorers and personalities.

Horrible to see him like that. While his playing days were befor me I remember later versions of his tv show and saw plenty of him as an analyst on tv and always was a likeable charachter. What a sad sight.

It's such a shame to see the once sparkly-eyed Jimmy in such a state. I'm far too young to have seen him play, and I remember being amazed when Pa Beamish told me just how good this genial old buffer I was watching on Saint & Greavsie had been, back in the day.
He represents a seemingly more innocent age of Football and Football Punditry.
I hope both Teams can put on a display this afternoon that'll bring a smile back to the old man's face. 4:3 to Burnley, please!

'it was pretty obvious I was going to be a footballer of some sort'

Yes, Jimmy Greaves, one that terrorised defenders, silenced opposition fans and frightened the hell out of me too many times to mention. Also one that I have admired, respected and eulogised about too many times on here. The greatest goalscorer I've ever seen or am likely to see.

124 top division goals for Chelsea, 16 goals in his first 15 England games and a record move to Milan, all by the time he was 21- Does anyone even come close to that?

All even before he even signed for Spurs!

His 44 goals came in 57 internationals for England, he scored 220 goals for Spurs and most of them against us it almost felt. When we played the reserves against Chelsea and drew 4-4 he scored two of them.

As Silkyskills1 said, the greatest goalscorer I've ever seen or am likely to see.

Check out his goal scoring record for Chelsea as a youth player. It reads like something from a boy's comic. Incredible.
