How many would say "Yes Please"

Post by Chester Perry » Mon Apr 03, 2017 3:19 am

Dodgy rumour that Newcastle are putting together a £10m bid for Scott Arfield (signed free after being released from Huddersfield)
Is this really the same bloke that signed Xabi Alonso and a young Torres

Of course I'd say yes please, initially, but then thinking about it seriously I'd have to wonder what it would cost to replace him and I'd be a bit hesitant.

I bet it's goals from Arfield and Boyd that keep us up. :D

Since being here he's proved to be a versatile addition, can play in our framework system with discipline, chip in with some belting goals.
He is definitely no worse than some of the clowns currently playing in England signed from abroad and valued at £10m+.

Boyd, Arfield and several other players have sacrificed their natural game for the sake of the cause.

I think £15m at least, come on Rafa, cough up

If we're still in this league next year then I'd take that. If we're not then I'd be tempted to keep him. A good Championship player who has the experience of promotion.

I'd be amazed if we got that sort of money for him. Don't get me wrong, I like Arfield as a squad player but it's a reminder of how crazy football is if that's his value in today's market.

We got Defour for 7.5 million or whatever it was.

I'd not only bite their hands off, but I'd suck off the directors for 10 million for Arfield.

We could get a very, very good upgrade for 10 million. Easily.

Small minds people!we would not be here in the first instance for his goals last two seasons in the championship.I do think he would shine a bit more at a Bournemouth are a Newcastle,he would get more licence to get into the box and pick up the goals,he is a terrific finisher. We expect our wingers to do the dirty work it's just the way it is.Fair enough he is not doing it in our system, but I just think it's very harsh the comments about him.He has been a fantastic signing for us.

He has but you'd have to be mad to turn that kind of money away. Can't see it happening anyway.

You do realise that they wouldn't be giving the 10 million to you personally?

As someone above said, if we go down, I'd probably keep. If we stay up, we must be looking to upgrade.

Cut out the middleman. Go straight to Mike Ashley with your offer.

We signed a player for £13m who can't oust him from the team and looks all at sea, when he comes on for Arfield or Boyd.

That's why he is a valuable commodity.

Interesting reading - I have the same dilemma as many of you - Scotty has scored some wonderful goals but only really gets those opportunities on a regular basis in the championship - though the Chelsea goal a couple of years ago was special. His overall contribution to our current game is significant and he gets a lot of game time. The key to it all is I don't think we will have the resources to make large numbers of changes over the summer - or get them in early enough - we will haggle over price to the bitter end. The distractions of replacing Keane and possibly Gray and Heaton (heaven forbid) will also make Sean cautious of losing too much of his mind set from the squad in a single window

you do realize how many minutes Arfield has played versus Defour don't you? Obviously SD rates Arfield above Defour so the prices quoted seem right, for SD Arfield is better than Defour and worth more. Why would you want another player who can not complete 90 minutes, and is constantly injured, makes no sense to me or SD for that matter?

So many people bleating on about Defour and his quality, but he has had many games like Hendricks and is missing plus never completes a full90 mins for the 1st team, if he can not play and show quality consistently then a hard working Arfield may be preferred (and is)

Sean loves Scottie he can play awful like Saturday yet stays on.No way will he sell him.Personally , I like Scott but has been found wanting in too many games with weak tackles and poor anticipation.
He is a very good championship player.
Perez and £10m and Rafa can have him

I just thought, with Boyd out of contract and interest in Arfield, with Joey likely to be banned, Brady and Westwood just arrived, Defour possibly off to China and Marney injured that just leaves Jeff and the Icelandic sick note. Sounds like Hendrick's got his work cut out for him in pre-season if all the rumours are true.

Can't see it myself.

40m for Keano, 10m for Arfers, 10m for D4 plus a further 40m from the kitty. I reckon SD could do some pretty good business with a 100m pot.

Heaton
Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Ward.

That means we need a player to cover CM and one each side.

Goody, Hendrick, Westwood, Brady

We need at least two for midfield and one for each side. Joey is likely to be away end of this season so I haven't included him.

Gray, Vokes.

At least one more, preferably two for up front.

8 or 9 required of quality that would be capable of pushing the first 11 and strengthen the squad. Is this achievable with 100m, I doubt it in today's market.
More likely we would get 5 or 6 and hope the likes of O'Neil, Aggers, and Long are at a point in their careers where they are capable of stepping up to the first team squad and are able to provide cover should it be required.

Barnes and Boyd should drop down the pecking order if we buy quality in the close season. If a decent offer came in for either I would consider it, but I wouldn't necessarily say that I would look to move them on. Both good squad players and would provide cover if it is required and /or we only get the one new player to challenge Gray and Vokes.

If there's anything in these Newcastle rumours I'll be absolutely amazed. Would snap their hand off at 5 million never mind 10.

He's been absolutely fantastic for us, but with £10 million on the table (which I really don't believe tbh) I'd be signing the necessary papers now and not picking him again in case he gets hurt before June.

Is the Icelandic 'sick note' the same one who was on the receiving end of a terrible tackle against Lincoln?

Hardly his fault.

bit of an odd one this, I have noticed over several seasons how when we are being covered on TV, the commentators can become very complimentary about some of our players. The consensus locally might be the opposite. Arfield is just one many who have drawn a lot of flak. Boyd being another.
Those not as involved, see things differently.
Look at how excitable we all got about Brady, since he arrived, its been largely negative.

No not that one JohnMac, it's the one who's missed 14 of our last 17 games with 3 or 4 different injuries.
It's a real shame because I think he's a very good player who's been very unlucky this season.

Arfield starting games and £20m worth of talent (Brady and Defour) on the bench

He's got to be worth that ;)

They receive flak because we have two many of the same players. Grafters are fine if their teammates are producing for the team.
