Football league - club developed players must be in matchday squad.

Starting from the 2018/19 season clubs in the Football League must name at least one player that's been 'developed' by the club in their match day squad.

Failure to do so will result in a reduction of available sub's during the match.

Also an increase in 'homegrown' players from 6 to 7.
Apparently all 72 League clubs have agreed to these changes.

This can only help the development of young players.

All 72 clubs were present and it was voted in so they have agreed it but no suggestion that all clubs were in favour.

Always thought they should have forced something like this when they went back up from 5 to 7 subs in 2012.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the policy, but I very much doubt whether it will help youngsters. If, for example, we had been forced to (say) leave Flanagan off the bench every game this season, and a full back got injured, the club-developed player that wasn't Dyche's first choice would get a game - Tarkowski would come on, and we'd have a reshuffle.

Basically, if a club doesn't feel that they have a club-developed player worth a place on the field, then they'll basically be playing with 6 subs. Which isn't a major hindrance.

All that will happen is is that if any of these show any promise a big club will come in offer a few 100k and poach them and let them rot in academy teams. Eventually diluting the talent pool even further.

We are putting Agyei in the matchday squad fairly regularly at the moment so we are already in compliance, two years in advance. Realistically we are already playing with only 6 subs.

Can't see the Premier League agreeing anything like this though. Too many don't have enough quality coming through their ranks. Though the ruling is that "... the player has been on their books for a minimum of 12 months prior to the end of their Under 19 season" so you could buy 18 year olds and that would be OK

If the big clubs get their way in two seasons time there will be 9 subs allowed. Already being discussed at the top level
