Cameron fully expected to win, and to put the issue to bed.
Unfortunately for him, most of the Tory constituencies in the Home Counties turned out to be Euro sceptic.
Polls suggest that about 65% of Labour voters voted remain, including the major cities of the north.
Many northern towns had a leave majority, but this was mainly due with an alliance of Euro-sceptic Tories and disenchanted Labour voters along with UKIPers.
Possibly one of the problems is that a tiny minority of northerners - who voted leave- do seem to be amongst the most angry winners.
