How on earth did we manage 14 away points previously?

Post by Spijed » Fri Apr 07, 2017 9:18 am

It seems quite remarkable that we got so many when the tactics were basically the same.

We were far more naive, especially at home two years ago, yet this didn't show as we got some good results at against teams such as Stoke, Man City, Newcastle, Villa etc.

the last 2 wins (6 points) were obtained after we'd already been relegated

The Stoke win came because we played with a winger who could carry the ball forwards.

Now, we largely don't bother trying to attack down the wings.

2 reasons

1. Crossing the Ball into the box
2. Danny Ings

We had Danny Ings during the home games as well but that didn't help much!

Basically the defence held tight when under the cosh after scoring first three times. We haven't this time yet.

Ings getting 11 goals is something I find more amazing, especially with the midfield we had at the time.

He seemed to finish off those few chances you get whilst playing away from home.

And I'd guess that in the games we collected points, we either scored from a cross, Ings or a combination of both.

We had a better RB and finisher back then. ( Not a dig at Lowton or Gray by the way )
Those moments of quality are often what turn defeats into draws or draws into defeats.

How many were winners?

He seemed to get all our away points through his goals.

He was a great away team style forward.

Pressed, worked hard, won headers and could finish the 1 chance that fell his way.
His impressive near 1 in 3 league record backed that up.
( Not sure how many if any were pens )

his header (set up by Trippier) at Old Trafford was superb!

We didn't work as hard back then, and so the opposition didn't work as hard against us
which allowed us a bit more freedom.

Plus, Ings knew the offside rule and could control a ball.

If only we could have had a season more like that one, eh?
