East Lancs Railway Booze Cruise

After a bit of advice if possible:
Looking to get a trip sorted in September and this has been mentioned. Anyone any experience of this - good or bad?
I presume that if there wasn't one on our chosen day we could just buy a ticket and hop on and off - but some routes might be better than others for good pubs?
Any tips greatly appreciated.

I've been on it -

It goes from Bury to Rawtenstall and back. We got off in Rammy on the way back and watched the Burnley - Liverpool game. (There's loads more pubs in Rammy, I'd reccomend this)

If your on the "tour" you get a set route with lunch in one of the pubs and a bottle of ale on the train. If your not on the tour, just grab a ticket, its valid all day and hop on and off when you like.

Its a good day out, with the ability to venture away from the tour if you so wish. Quite a bit of walking, but that's fine if your walking off the last few ales.

WensleyAle & Gin Train

Another one in our series of WensleyAle trains will run in the evening of Saturday 22nd April departing from Leeming Bar at 1830 and returning for around 2130.

Following on from our recent Prosecco train this event will be focused on gin tasting.

A selection of artisan and quality fabulous gins, with an assortment of refreshing mixers will be available for an inclusive price of £25. This will include four gin and tonics to be enjoyed throughout your journey as well as train travel. Extra gin will be available on the evening.

If gin is not to your taste instead you can receive four beer tokens with train travel for £25.
If you prefer to just come along for the train journey tickets are available for £10.
Due to popular demand we have had to increase ticket sales three times this will be the last increase so book soon!

Beginning in late May, Upstairs At Institutions famous afternoon teas will be served in style in a luxurious 1912 built, London and North Western Railway directors' saloon.

Me and some pals from work do it as our quarterly excursion. Firstly, check they don't have an event on the weekend you are choosing to go - if there is one the prices are usually sky high. If not you can either buy a day pass to go up and down the line as much as you like, although we tend to start in Bury and work our way back to Rawtenstall. This usually only costs about £7.

Pubs to visit:
Bury.
The Robert Peel - Spoons pub so good cheap ale and a good place to grab breakfast
Trackside - This is on the station platform at Bury and is a must. Ale selection is good, although they don't always keep it well.

Summerseat.
The Footballers & The Hamers - Two good pubs opposite each other a short walk from the station. If you didnt get breakfast in Bury, now is the time.

Ramsbottom.
The Railway - Straight outside the station it's a clean newish pub with a small selection of ales. Good beer garden though.
Irwell Works Brewery - The jewel in the crown of the ELR Ale Trail. Be prepared to spend the majority of your time in here with a belting selection of ales and good patrons. Also has a cracking platform outside where you can observe the scenery over the hills of Ramsbottom.
Ramsbottom Tap - Nice little pub with a selection of ales and continental beers.
The Major - Short walk up the hill and a reasonable pub. Nothing spectacular but a nice choice of ales.

Rawtenstall.
Buffer Stops - Last official pub on the trail again on the platform. Twinned with its sister, the trackside, at Bury so expect the same choice of ales.

Just to add, if you can be arsed/still sober enough to walk up to bank street from the buffers, the hop is decent if real ale is your thing

Having checked on our date, I don't think there is an organised trip then so it might be a case like Darthlaw says of just getting the pass and hopping on and off. Ideally, we would like to start and finish at Burnley.
Have done the Hebden Bridge journey lots of times so could start with that and add extra stops/go further etc.

Not to be ignorant but you know it starts at Rawtenstall? If you're getting there by public transport, the best bet is to catch the X43 bus to Rawtenstall then start there. Also, factor in the first / last trains as we usually don't have enough time and finish up missing the last train from Ramsbottom and catching a taxi back to Burnley.

Last time I went in the Peel the beer was poor (it was a few years back). Another option for Bury town centre is The Clarence on Silver Street, close to the railway station.

Clarence in Bury is expensive supping. If you're there in daytime there's a real ale stall in the covered market.
Rammy's also got an excellent brewery/pub and agree Hop in Rawtenstall is spot on,

Cracking day out. Added to buffer stops and the hop the white lion a bit further up Burnley Road has decent selection of real ales.
