I'd prefer Defour in the hole, with Gray up top.

Yeah but, so I'll stop because of the 'but' bit.

Neither of them comfortable with their back to goal, so can't see it being a winning combination. We need someone to hold the ball up.

Boyd breaking beyond Barnes or Vokes? Possibly. Arfield (who is far more adept with his back to goal) playing off Gray? Possibly. Gray and Boyd? Less obviously complimentary than either if the above.

I can see it now as Boyd storms through one on one with the goalkeeper before deciding to turn around and pass to Lowton

I wouldn't want Boyd with his back to goal...anyway I think he would be more than comfortable if so.

As for Gray, my thoughts are he would benefit from having Boyd not along side him, but near(er) him.

Boyd has a bit about him in the No.10 position. His most effective offensive football for us has been from him drifting into central positions. The question is whether or not his effectiveness centrally has a greater impact on the team than his effectiveness protecting the full-back. I'd rather see him behind the striker. He has been deployed virtually as a second full-back for most of his time at Burnley. He's got more about him that that. Will be interesting to see how we line up when JBG is fit.

One of his jobs is to drift in and help the two central midfielders out. Another of his jobs is to help the full back out, as is getting up to support the front two.

Boyd would be sh1te at this level as a number 10.

We don't have a more natural no.10, IMO. JBG and Brady appear to have decent defensive industry. I honestly think it'd be worth a try away from home. We couldn't be any more tame than we are, offensively.

Boyd's most influential position prior to joining us was playing behind the front two. I can't see Boyd being effective alongside Gray in the system we play. I'd be interested to see how we'd perform in a 4-2-3-1 formation. With our usual back five. Barton and Westwood in the defensive two, with Hendrick or Brady and JBG or Hendrick linking up with Defour in a more forward central role with Gray up front.
