Bidding wars? If an an acceptable offer comes in and Burnley accept it then other clubs would offer the same. They aren't going to offer more as they'll use the offer of wages to persuade him.

This can only lead to the conclusion that some paperwork is already in place.
As a current England international with praise being heaped on him his value has to be more than that.
If he had a 5 year contract here he would be worth more than £20M, he has just one year left.

the key is for the club not to accept bids, wait for a number of clubs to be aware that they are bidding against each other - no named price to clubs player or agent - see what transpires

correct but this could be an auction. My point is regarding Everton appearing to be very confident.

He certainly has represented the club well and conducted himself impeccably. He has been an absolute star for us and I'm proud he wore our colours. It's not a shock we all knew, but I'm gutted nevertheless . Good luck to him he's earned it.

We will get more than £20m for him IMHO.

He was never going to have a 5 year contract - we gave him the same length of contract we give to all / most the players we sign -3 to 4 years.

We then offered him a new improved contract and he turned it down.

I don't think there is any real difference between having 2 or 3 years left on your contract or 5. The real difference is when you are getting near one year.

Don't think the club could do anymore than they have and as already said not sure why fans would be moaning at having 3 plus great years from Keane and £20m to £25m profit. In fact it's incredible that anyone is moaning !

Wtf are you talking about? Did I say something negative? I stated if he had a longer contract he would sell for more.

Plenty of moaning on this thread blaming the board for not getting Keane signed up to a longer contract or Burnley being naive in the transfer market.

If you weren't being negative - apologies - I mean you are rarely negative about the club are you ?!!! So what was the actual point of saying if he had a 5 year contract we would get more for him ?

I quoted Minnies post about his value and stated a fact that if Keane had a longer contract he'd be worth more than the £20m quoted. You can replace the number 5 with any other number over 1. Would it have not been negative if I said 3 years and not 5?

Best of luck to MK. He's done us proud, and when you think about it, joining Burnley FC was a great move for him....We just need to find the next Michael Keane ASAP.

Ok replace negative with "pointless" - in the context of "if my auntie had balls she'd be mi uncle"

Not quite the same considering his current contract length will affect his value, its common sense really. I'm not sure why you're looking for an argument, I stated a fact, nothing negative at all. I guess it is Friday night after all....

It's not a fact though is it - it's a supposition.

A fact is something that has happened or is happening.

It is a Friday night though - that's a fact !

Its a fact, players are worth more/less depending on their current contract situation.

It's a supposition that we would get more money for Keane if he had signed a 5 year contract - it is not a fact....it's really not that hard to understand.

In this day and age if a player wants to go the length of his contract (unless we are talking months) is pretty irrelevant.

Why would a club pay more for a player if he had a 5 year contract than if he had a 1 or 2 year contract if they know he wants to leave and they know he has no intention of seeing his contract out and leaving for nothing at the end of it ?

This is especially the case for a club like Burnley where other clubs know that we would not let a player rot in the reserves just because we don't want to sell him - infact when is the last time any club did that despite the bravado shown by some managers or owners ?....like West Ham with Payet.

Even as a general point it's not a fact.

You have completely missed my very simple point. You are 100% correct, the contract is pretty much irrelevant to a player that wants to leave because players tend to win but I was talking about the value of a player. The contract is relevant in regards to the fee that the selling club can demand/expect.

Not missed your point at all.

The price of the player is based on demand and supply - as is the price of everything. The length of the contract does not come into play anymore. The price of Keane will be dependent on how many clubs want him. If Burnley say they want £50m for him - again it's irrelevant if nobody wants to pay that for him and the price we get for him will be lower than £50m or whatever "value" we have placed on him.

So a player is not necessarily worth more dependent on the length of his contract - because he is only worth what another club is prepared to pay for him.

Yes, well. there are three possible sources for this "story":

1. Burnley FC trying to talk the price down.
2. Everton FC trying to talk the price up.
3. An agent trying to talk up his fee.

I suspect number 3.

You said it yourself "a player is worth what another club is prepared to pay" clubs would be willing to pay more for a player with 2 or more years left than they are if a player had 1 year left. The selling club will accept lower to move the player on so they don't lose the player for nothing 1 year later.
