Flight path over Burnley

Or are we being invaded?

I keep hearing and seeing a lot of low flying planes passing over, more so than usual and lower than usual.

Are we now beneath a new route to Manchester / Leeds / Liverpool now we are a Northern, Premier League town, Powerhouse?

flightradar24 is the app to see flights.

The lowest plane at present seems to be the oslo to Manchester flight although there are a lot who drop down early heading for Leeds Bradford.

These flights tend to be about 8000 feet.

The airport is also the highest in England at an elevation of 681 ft (208 m)

Above according to Wiki.but I suspect it is the highest in the UK as you state..

Whenever I am flying over England I try to work out where I am by spotting local football grounds. The other week I flew into Manchester from Copenhagen and was peering out of the window when I saw a very familiar sight below...

There is a waypoint beacon over the Long Causeway. Periodically, flight paths are altered to avoid one area getting all the traffic and this beacon comes into use - presumably aircraft flying into Manchester and Leeds suddenly appear more frequently in our skies. Thats what I was once informed by an ATC and the beacon is visible on http://www.content-delivery.co.uk/aviat ... ields/vor/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; if you click on the symbol next to Leeds, its VOR POL.

Airports have a number of standard terminal arrival routes (STARs), which then makes it easier to control arrivals as they're following set routes until directed by air traffic control to line up with the runway.

One of these STARS is via ROSUN, which is a waypoint on the hills overlooking Rossendale (hence the name) and arrivals from the north (where they pass over Settle or the Lakes) and east (where they route through the Pole Hill VOR navigation aid) will more often than not pass over Burnley.

Yep. Seen it several times in the last few months, west of Burnley (I think). Makes a noise like an angry hornet. I thought I may be practising for displays. Very impressive.

Flew from Dublin to Manchester and back over easter - both times we routed over Burnley - which isn't normally the case. Usually out over the moors towards the TV tower, then turn in from there.

Rosin - Rossendale is a arrival pattern for Manchester
Normally traffic from the North & East route this way around a flight level of 8,000ft inbound Manchesters 23R or 05R runways.

Pole Hill (located in Tod) is a ADF beacon (Automatic direction finder) beacon and is used a beacon for traffic passing from Arrival & departure points such as Frankfurt,Munich,Amsterdam heading Westbound or Eastbound from the states ,also west bound traffic at flight level a 19,000ft to 40,000ft also from Heathrow & Gatwick heading Westbound via Scotland using Pole hill as a ADF.

Normally Trent-Pole hill - Talla flights from the south
Normally Pole hill - Wallasey - or Isle o Man flights from the east
Normally Isle o man - Pole hill - Ottringham flights from the west

Nelsa- Is a departure pattern from Leeds/Bradford
Normally Nelsa- MCT (Manchester) Trent (Stoke on Trent ) for traffic departing south bound from Leeds/Bradford.

You will also see lots of light movements transmitting from Blackpool to Leeds and a extra EA300 (stunt plane) which a local lad owns normally flying over Burnley.

Sorry be to be pedantic but Pole Hill (POL) is a VOR-DME (VHF Omnidirectional Radio beacon with Distance Measuring Equipment 112.1 MHz) not an ADF or NDB (Non-Directional Beacon).

I think Burnley missed being Lockerbie by 9 minutes. I was in the Mechanics that night and I still have fantasies about returning home to see the street completely gone.

Re the RAF flying over Barnoldswick, I think they flew from Lincolnshire and headed to the Ribble Cement works chimney at Clitheroe, where they turned and then headed back to base. I believe the terrain was supposedly similar to an area in Russia.
I worked for British Gas 20 years ago and daily had to work between Colne and Barnoldswick. One sunny day driving into Earby, I heard a loud noise and flying what I thought was low, very close to my view, was a big odd shaped black plane. I was completely distracted from my driving and pulled over. Some will know better than me, but I think it was a Stealth Bomber type. Ive never seen another.

The plane you mentioned was pretty regular appeared out of nowhere just above the rooftops..like it was about to land. one flew over kelbrook recently heading that way.......

Starting to regret reading this thread. I found myself tracking a US military plane flying over Ireland last night and watched it all the way to north east of Cheltenham. Quite fascinating to see all these planes. Was a bit weird seeing a plane from Greece over Liverpool which was going to Luton airport though.

Got it set to Military filter and have just had my first identification which didnt show up on FR24 - it was an Italian C30. Doesn't half make a hum through the house even though its at 27,000 feet!

My cousin drove my Mum through Lockerbie on their way to Perthshire a few short hours before the disaster.
A near miss in the grand scheme of things.
