Best ground for pies?

Post by Croydon Claret » Fri Apr 28, 2017 5:33 pm

Most surprisingly I thought the pies at West Ham were amazing this year. A little sloppy and could only be eaten out of a tray with a fork but nevertheless taste heaven.

Most unusual for London.

Any memorable pies on your travels?

Did they serve them with mash?

There was a post on the York 1992 thread about terraces.

Looking back at those days, surely football pies are meant to be a bit crap (as long as the prices reflects this). I've eaten pies on the Longside that looked, and tasted, like they'd been reheated week after week.

The crusts were a very strange shade of yellow and had the texture of sandpaper. The filling was usually drier than a nun's chuff and something in it would give my trumps the most unholy smells.

Happy days.

I'll second Hull.

The best pie I had was the Balti pie at Birmingham - exquisite !

EDIT:- Just remembered that I had two of them.

I seem to remember the first time i had a Pukka pie was on the old Rotherham ground,
Millmoor. Very good.

Londoners rave about Pukka pies as though they're something special.

It's like proclaiming that Blue Nun is the best thing ever when you've never tried Champagne (other alcoholic similes are available :D )

I'm surprised clubs aren't sacrificing a bit of profit and looking at linking up with local suppliers etc.

I liked the pie I had at Old Trafford. Can't remember the name but it was steak, chilli and cheese. Very tasty!

Best pie iever had was about 25 years ago at Bramhall lane in the cup.
Christ it was good..not too sloppy, not too dry perfect seasoning & a sticky glazed crust.
Meat'n Tattie goes without saying, none of this new fangled muck.

Not quite a pie, but the beef slice outside the Barnsley ground was superb. I really miss that beef slice; I really hope they make it to the Premiership so I can have one again ;)

I've never had a meat and tatie pie anywhere better than at Turf Moor between 1986 ish and 1991 ish.

We've spoken about this before but no one knows who supplied them.

It was one reason that I used to sometimes go on the Bee Hole at that time. Easier delicious pie service.

The pasties at Bristol Rovers were excellent. They ran out in the visitors end, so we got Jamie Hoyland to go across the home end to get some for us!!

Fulham for me. Filled my boots with super delicious pie & a burger. Great food there. I'd be 20 stone if I followed them

Much as I disliked the overall experience of West ham this year. I have to agree with the OP that the standard of pie was very good. The filling was substantial and the pastry seemed to have suet and herbs in it - superb.
