European qualification
Now forgive me for getting ahead of myself but am I right in thinking that if Man U win the Europa League and finish outside the top 4 then they would qualify for the Champions League along with the top 4.
Would that mean that there would be no qualifier for Europe from the League Cup (as Man U won it), so the next 3 places in the league would qualify for the Europa League i.e. 8th place in the league gets in?
If so, then all to play for esp as WBA (currently 8th) have some tough games and might just stuff it up.
Anyhow, as I say, forgive me for inferring that we could sneak a Europa League place.
Those in the know, please put me right regarding European qualification and over-optimism about our chances (esp when we haven't quite nailed staying in this league just yet!!)

We'd only end up with someone as allegedly crap as Trelleborg and lose to them...

Re: European qualification
England only get 4 CL places in total. So if Manure were to win the best of the rest cup and finish 5th they would get CL place and 4th placed team would drop down to EL.
I don't know how many EL places we get in total.

Re: European qualification
I thought they changed that rule, after Liverpool won the European Cup and the fourth place team (Everton?) missed out? Or did that rule only change for winners fo the European Cup, not the UEFA Cup? [Or whatever they call themselves nowadays.]minnieclaret wrote:England only get 4 CL places in total. Re: European qualification
Everton only missed out because they got beat in the qualification rounds, it was to a Spanish side I think. otherwise we'd of had five English sides in it that year.
If United win the Europa cup we will have 5 in next year if they all get through qualifiers

Re: European qualification
my understanding was that because of the 5, when Lpool were holders, that would never happen again?SirAlec wrote:Everton only missed out because they got beat in the qualification rounds, it was to a Spanish side I think. otherwise we'd of had five English sides in it that year.

Re: European qualification
It looks like we would have 5 in the Champions League and 3 in the Europa. Should Chelsea win the FA Cup then that place would go to the second highest placed team who hadn't qualified for The Champions league and the League Cup winners place to the third highest non Champions League position. So could be 6th, 7th and 8th to qualify for the Europa League (or it might not!)

Re: European qualification
Lets just say we do qualify for the europa league by finishing 8th.
We would most probably have to play in the first qualifying round where the first leg will be played on 29th of June.
Giving the squad very little time off before returning for pre-Season training.
I suppose we could view the tie as a pre-season friendly.

Re: European qualification
Only 4 CL spots even if Utd win the EL
When Chelsea won the CL Spurs finished 4th and missed out on CL cos Chelsea finished outside the top 4
Same would apply

Re: European qualification
We can have 5 teams in the Champions League now, but only a maximum of 7 in total in Europe still. So it looks like if United won the Europa but finished fifth or lower, they'd join the top 4 in the CL and just Everton and either 5th or 6th (whichever United aren't) would go into the EL

Re: European qualification
Dare to dream and all that. I can still remember watching us get beat by Eintracht Frankfurt and never dreamed we would get and stay in the Premier League. Never say never.
