Have you ever made an ok sign with your hands?

Post by ClaretMoffitt » Tue May 02, 2017 8:07 am

Better not, because if you do, people may mistake you for a white supremacist.

I think the reason that you might be mistaken for a white supremacist is only if you are already repeatedly being mistaken for a white supremacist, because you act like a bit of a white supremacist. But hey, what do I know?

I can't comment on dog stories to be honest though, as it would only count if it was a cat.

Does that make you a cat supremacist?

Trouble is, they aren't just every day people doing the gesture, they are members of the alt-right.

Sorry CM/Damo, not aimed at you, aimed at the people who the story was about.

And yes, Sidney, I stand for the supremacy of cats.

I'm not an evil man, I just have cycled through far too much dogshit in my time to like the tail wagging stains on our planet :-)

No, the media has just branded them alt-right, like they do with every young conservative public figure that has a medium to large social media presence.

I mean, have you read her twitter? She's clearly a bit racist and goes on about the "liberal left" a lot.

I haven't actually but I really don;t understand how slagging off the liberal left in any way shape or form makes you racist.

As a dog lover and the rescuer of two lovely terriers can someone please tell me what it is that is impure about dogs and how does that impact on or shape peoples view of race or religion.

Only they know whether they meant it as an 'OK' sign or something more sinister, and you'll have to take their word for it this time.

Now it's had the media furore, anyone else who copies the symbol going forward will likely be fully aware of the significance and I wouldn't view it as innocent.

Can't remember it exactly but something in the quran about "black dogs" having evils spirits inside them. Dogs as a whole then somehow managed to get a bad rep. They can only be used as tools, and never as pets. Angel Gabriel can't enter the house of a muslim when a dog is inside (because of the evil spirits) so therefore they must be bad.

Possibly. But anyone making it now knows that it is also has this other meaning, and knowing that still makes it. I certainly would be avoiding it going forward if it were me.

Slagging off the left doesn't make her racist, but suggesting that Nuking Hiroshima was good and there "haven't been any terrorists since" is a little bit out of order. And that's just the surface of her tweets.

I've just read the article and it's certainly a contender for the stupidest thing I'll read today.

Or at least until people on FB start posting.

Suggest you do CM

I can see what you are trying to do here, but you really need to find people who are being unfairly targeted for it to work.

Who even makes the OK sign anyway, unless they're diving? Cretins.

I'm interested to read this. I work with a Muslim guy and he was telling me that they can't have dogs in their house. I asked why and he said because they're dirty, so I replied that you can bathe dogs and clip them. He then came back with another couple of issues (which I can't recall) that I similarly countered, before he said something along the lines of 'well we believe that the angels won't visit us if we have a dog'. To be honest I thought he'd just made that up at the time so I couldn't come up with another rebuttal but seemingly not. I must admit I found it utterly laughable and thought to myself if his argument is getting this abstract I'm literally never going to win so I just left it there.

Its not an opinion I agree with but it's no way white supremacist. This is the problem the left have, they label people things that they arent in order to publicly damage them. If they Attacked their words and ideas without fabrication and outright lies I'd probably be a liberal.

In answer to the thread title I haven't used it personally, but my aged mother who is getting to grips with emoticons sent me the emoticon for it when I rejected her FaceTime request by telling her I was "having a sh!t" and it wasn't a good time. Heaven only knows what my mother thinks I was doing... apart from actually having a sh!t...!

It's a Pavlovan response. Disagree then you must be (first thing that comes into head) racist. Once that thought is in there, there is no room for anything else. Similar to the Turtle's "you're stupid, you're a moron" reponse.

I don't think you can offer that as Pavlovian at all, Chobulous.

Most people have critical thinking skills, and can see past buzz words and phrases and get to the deeper meaning behind things.

In this case, this woman, after reading her tweets, seems to have somewhat of a pro nuke, anti muslim agenda. Not just her slagging off the "Left" which is totally fine, but the advocacy of using nuclear weapons to stop "The terrorists".

That's one example, her twitter is full of subtle racism/xenophobia.

its a small, yet important, point but C&J didn't say that slagging off the' 'left' was racist.

I'm massively critical of Islam and many Muslims. I'm not racist, my level of criticism doesn't change whether they are white, black, Indonesian, Arabic, whatever. Most of these public figures are anti Islam, that doesn't make them racist.

I really don't get the nuke point though. I don't see what it has to do with terrorism in the conventional sense at all.

I'm often moved to use the OK hand gesture to Audi drivers. I find that stressing just how OK they are is to move my hand backwards and forwards. It would appear that most Audi drivers don't appreciate being viewed as OK.

As an atheist I can still appreciate the moral teachings that religion advocates, e.g love thy neighbour and so forth, even though I don't think it's necessary to be religious to live life in the right way. However, when people start letting their life choices get determined by arbitrary notions of angels not liking dogs then I have to just step away from proceedings and leave them to it because it flies in the face of logic and reason which is how I usually make decisions.
