Re: SD's best signing
The three freebies, Heaton, Jones and Arfield proved to be very astute signings in his first promotion season. Heaton on a free edges it for me.
Then two years later Barton on a free saw SD pull the rabbit from the hat once again.
Overall, it's a battle between Keane and Heaton if I have to shortlist it to two. How difficult this is shows how far we've come.

Been a lot, and I don't disagree with those who have said Tom Heaton or Scott Arfield, but it is David Jones for me. He was a massive influence in both of the promotion teams, an absolute key player.

Ha ha - I can only assume anyone not rating him and not seeing how key he was to the two promotions won't be able to hunt me down because they surely don't go anywhere near the Turf. Superb signing.Sidney1st wrote:That's going to be you in trouble with the mob who don't rate him![]()

Heaton, Jones, Arfield, Barnes, Ward, Keane, Boyd, Gray, Lowton, Barton, Tarkowski, Hendrick, Westwood, Gudmundsson
Not a bad team for a manager who is useless in the transfer market.
Have I missed anyone other than Defour, who is hardly a failure, and Brady, who I am sure will continue the trend.

I'm getting just a whiff of "irony" there!KRBFC wrote:Probably Steven Reid, Jutkiewicz and Sordell to spearhead a PL charge for survival.

Heaton or Keane for me.
Re: SD's best signing
Tom Heaton for me ahead of Michael Keane purely because the signing was one from a relegated club that had conceded so many goals.
It was not well received, whereas we probably knew more about Keane and less of a risk.

Tom Heaton in terms of quality, Scott Arfield in terms of uncovering a rough diamond, Joey Barton in terms of managing risk and reward

Airfield for me. Never heard of him when we signed him but, as stated somewhere above, his overall contribution has been immense.
Oh. Nearly forgot. That goal and that celebration! We'll be talking about that many years from now.

Re: SD's best signing
Whilst Heaton was clearly a master stroke considering he'd been in goal for a team relegated from the Championship having shipped a shed load of goals, it still HAS to be Arfield for me. A total unknown, kicking about in Uddersfeeled reserves and not even well liked or rated by the crowd when he did play. To see something in him and turn him instantly into a great Championship player and a more than half decent PL player was simply visionary.

Re: SD's best signing
A player that has been castigated so many times on here. I would vote for David Jones. Supporters seemed genuinely keen for him to join us and I was in Ireland with hundreds of other fans when he eventually appeared for us. Central to two promotions and he could well have another on his CV in a couple of weeks time. A classic example of 'an unsung hero'. Literally at the Turf.
