Re: O/T Genuine Question - Golliwogs, Racist or Not?
I've actually been called Sambo in the past as a nickname, but I'm confident that the people saying it had no idea of the racist connotations the word brings. In fact when I was at college I worked part-time on the butchers at Morrisons in Nelson and my manager kept shouting "Sambo" to get my attention whenever he needed me. I had to quietly explain that it's perhaps one to best avoid given how loaded a term it is, especially in front of a shop full of customersFunkydrummer wrote:Sammyboy, your user name is one letter away from Sammbo.
Well, a few letters actually, but you can see how easily offended I am.![]()

A lot of PCness is from people taking offence on someone else's behalf, not their own. I remember someone telling me they were advised in church not to mention a blind man as having something wrong with him; there's nothing "wrong" with being blind. But the blind lady in the congregation was more than willing to agree there is something "wrong" if you are blind - she wasn't offended by the idea that blindness is a bad thing.

Is your colleague the spokesperson for all black people?
Re: O/T Genuine Question - Golliwogs, Racist or Not?
There isn't a spokesman for all black people. Black people have opinions of their own; they don't all think the same thing.ClaretAndJew wrote:Is your colleague the spokesperson for all black people?

There's a very clear difference between these two things:
Being offended om behalf of somebody else.
Understanding why others might be offended by something, even if it doesn't offend you.

It doesn't make sense to me anyway, unless I'm just not getting it. Golliwogs are black? not oriental?Rick_Muller wrote:as mentioned previously on the thread this is not true. Whilst goolging for more info I found a definition for Backronym which explains the confusion.
