Re: Things you miss in football
Being able to move when you farted so someone else got the blame.

Re: Things you miss in football
Standing with my mates and like minded folk, singing, drinking and smoking while watching Burnley,it hardly gets better than that.
Re: Things you miss in football
Looking at the 'team for next season' thread it looks like a lot of people missed the new contract Dale Stephens signed at BHA.

If this was a family fortune's question my answer is "the goal."
Could also try: "port-a-cabin changing huts;" "pitch marked out in sawdust;" and "oranges at half-time."
Goal posts for jumpers, anyone?

I miss all of those, Totti hangs up his boots this year at the age of 9000 as well. Literally just Buffon left from probably the best era of football in my life.KRBFC wrote:Anything?
I miss the old AC Milan side, Shevchenko, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Seedorf.
The game isn't the same without Sir Alex.
Another thing, Keane v Vieira, where it actually seemed to mean something between the players. I don't think the foreign players quite understand the English game.
I tell you what I really miss though. Watching Thierry Henry. I literally remember having to watch MOTD just because you knew he would do somthing. He was absolutely fxxxin quality.

Orange balls being used on frozen hard, snowy pitches with the touchlines brushed clear. Oh and penalties actually being given for grappling in the box.

The Victory V references are interesting... my grandad was the manager at Victory V in Nelson for several years.

The **** running out the bogs behind the Bee Hole end, the half time scores in the wooden boards in front of the cricket field end, getting a pint to sup on the longside, being able to wander about, smoking, having your own little standing area with your mates, jumping up and down to keep warm, not just because you were winning then the Saturday evening "Pink" being read after the match outside Woolworths with a bag of chips.

Half the people in the ground changing position at half time.
I also miss:
The patch left on your forehead after heading a wet casey.
Playing walley.
Playing one and you're through.
Playing headers and volleys.
Having an agreement in place for determining who would have to fag the ball if it went over a wall or fence.
Trying to get the ball from under a car.

I miss football from my childhood, it seemed so much better maybe because I was young.boyyanno wrote:I miss all of those, Totti hangs up his boots this year at the age of 9000 as well. Literally just Buffon left from probably the best era of football in my life.

I loved Ruud Van Nistelrooy, I even had a Vodafone United kit just to get his name on the back when I was a school kid

Italian football was great back then, in fact I think football in general was better.
Re: Things you miss in football
Tackles where a player who got caught, would not show his pain and just carry on. No free kick.
and....
Defenders who defended properly. No shirt pulling and no arms wrapped round an opponent.

Re: Things you miss in football
Playing it! Retired 2 years ago at the age of 37 and missed it since. Decided to quit when I was playing one time and was 15 yards in front of the defender and got caught up
used to be a whippet! I could've played in defence or in the nets but I was a striker and loved it.
Watching football Italia in the early 90's. Being in awe when a team came to the turf and they had a well known striker, still the same now but nowhere near as much. Hoping to beat a team in the cup from the prem/1st division. Going to games with my dad. Listening to radio lancs when I was a kid when we were away. It being relatively cheap to go to games! Now with 5 of us costs a flaming fortune

Obviously you either started playing football very late in life or had parents that cleaned your boots for you.

No I played from around 16 years of age to about 34 years of age,my parents didn't clean my boots they stayed in my kit bag for a week and I would put them on wet through and mouldy from the previous week, that's if I hadn't lost my kit bag due to having ten pints after a game and leaving it in some pub somewhere stinking!kentonclaret wrote:Steve1956

The ball boys being introduced and running into the centre circle and waving.
Then the teams came out separately to the roar of their own fans and boos of the opposition fans, and then warmed up with 4 or 5 balls with the mascot shooting in at the keeper.
I cannot abide this handshake with the oppo and then into your own half for a cuddle with your team mates.
