No nay never song

Post by Burnley loyal » Sat May 13, 2017 8:31 pm

My uncle today was going mental that we sing it wrong, 'till we play' and not 'will we play!

And he is right. If you listen to the words, singing 'till' makes no sense.

Who sung it first, Rovers or Burnley?

We were talking about this the other day....some seemed to think it got changed in the 80's to "till" because we hardly played them or something....!

But as I said....I've started going on the Longside from 85 until it was demolished and the Longside during that time always sang "till we play B'stard Rovers"

Langauge evolves. At one time 'will' was correct. Then because we were crap 'till' was correct. Something to hope for/ believe in. Now 'will' is correct again. Was also 'till' in my day too! But if things keep going the way they are, it will soon be 'who?'

Don't think anyone is certain, but I imagine we sang it first- after all, '******* Rovers' fits in better with the actual lyrics then 'Burnley ********'.

I was told it was started in the 60s when Rovers went down.

It's 'WILL WE PLAY' - Sad I know, but it irrates me too.

Just like those who sing 'Bertie Bee' when it's 'Bertie Mee', add in 'In our Lancashire Homes' to that as well... Should be 'in our Lancashire home'

The song is 'Wild rover' so I guess there's a huge clue there:

And it's no, nay, never
No, nay, never no more
Will I play the wild rover
No, never no more

It's a Burnley song and your s/hit kicking lot tried to claim it

Burnley came up with it first, without a doubt. It's not even a debate. Burnley began singing it when Rovers dropped to Division 3 and Burnley were in Division 1. The original words were 'WILL we play Blackburn Rovers (no Bastards in those days), No Never, No More'. Very early 70's.

Rovers fans earliest claims of their version are 1978, WAY after we began singing it. Some of the older Rovers fans have confirmed this of forums and facebook, but it wasn't even close with the years. Maybe 5-6 years apart.

I'd suggest these days the gap would be a lot closer for a comeback, but in those days they had no Internet, so relied on Rovers fans at the Burbley matches etc.

we were singing this in the 72-73 promotion season.
As said above it was plain Blackburn at first and I can't remember when it evolved into basturds.

Yeah, 72-73 promotion season, that was it. Things were going great for us and poorly for them. They've got their own version, which makes us unique in our rivalry I think, but Burnley's was definitely first by a good number of years,

And to Burnley Loyal, the OP, your uncle is absolutely right.

The words WILL we play (when we were the superior club 2 leagues apart) were changed to TIL we play in the 80's as they were better. Should now be WILL again, obviously, with our league status.

The question was, and is again, WILL we ever play them again considering our status,

I hope not 2 more relegations and the game is over. Not that its too far away now with the ridiculous money involved in their debt. What is their incomings to outgoings / running costs projection for 2017 / 18 plus already enormous debt again?

An old schoolmate and myself first got this going in the 72/73 season.
True story.

I posted this on another thread:

I find the fact that the melody to No Nay Never is sung incorrectly more frustrating to be honest. Please could we distribute music to the singers to demonstrate where they are going wrong.

This is the incorrect version:

Image

As you can see, in bars 11 and 12, there are three Gs and then an E. In the correct version (as seen below) this section should start on an E and then descend in step motion from a C to an A. The note immedately after the minim rest should also be an A instead of a G.

Should be "we'll never play Blackburn Rovers, no never no more. Except in the cup."

Can we confirm the correct words for these songs with the Liverpool fans we stole them off
