While we're on the subject of the NHS and technology, what are people's thoughts on the system working like the police?

By that I mean shared nationwide. I've been to hospitals where they know absolutely naff all about me and we have to start from scratch. The consultant I see now knows very little about me in terms of appointments at Burnley General, as they had to post the records and they got 'lost' in the post. If it was all networked up, there wouldn't be any need for that.

I remember there being a new system being developed that got scrapped after a mere £12 billion was wasted on it. Can't remember why now though.
Just think how many brexit buses that could have paid for.

No no. We can't have that. That would be the NHS being too efficient and that would mess with the plan of under-funding it and then blaming it for failures that are caused by under-funding it. How are we going to become an entirely privatised health care market if we run the NHS properly?

I think someone has already mentioned it but legacy systems are as likely, as is lack of funding, for the inability to upgrade from Win XP. I remember being involved in a project with a large mining co in Oz who wanted to undertake a company wide OS update from XP to 7. Turned out that due to a single piece of software that was critical to the business we were only able to roll out to 10% of the fleet.

We approached the vendor to work with them on an upgrade for the system and they told us it was virtually impossible due to the architecture. It was cheaper for the mining co to stay n XP and 'deal' with things as they happened.....

Regarding 'Lorenzo' the national NHS project, that was a farce form start to end. It proved that the government cant write and manage large scale IT tenders/projects. Just my opinion....oh and CSC blew the budget way out of the water!

"Lorenzo" was the chosen system around 2013 which was abandoned after it was costing twice as much as its intended £6b.

Training on the system had already started and if it had have been implemented would have been a major advancement.
As has been already mentioned, it's not just the hospital systems but the support systems that can prevent the upgrades required

My partner works in the NHS in Surrey. In her hospital they've only just finished upgrading from Vista to XP

I believe there is no more support for XP no wonder the system went down.
