Cliff Jones ex-Spurs

I was impressed with his performance yesterday at the closing ceremony at White Hart Lane. Alex Elder once said he was his most difficult opponent but I didn't expect him, at the age of 82, to see him run from the tunnel to the centre circle.

He was certainly more sprightly than Joe Kinnear. I didn't think he was going to make it to the others.

He was very quick was Jones, an outstanding winger.

I watched the ceremony and I think the four who came out from the double team - Les Allen, Terry Dyson, Cliff Jones and Terry Medwin - are probably the only four now still alive. A couple of ex-Clarets out there with Paul Stewart and Chris Waddle alongside current Claret Paul Robinson - and of course, had he still been alive, Ralph Coates would have been there.

For a team that hasn't won that much over the years there was certainly a lot of talent came out onto the pitch - including Joe Kinnear who has suffered with ill health for some time.

Yes it was great seeing the lads from the great double winning 'push and run' team of the early '60's. Cliff Jones has obviously looked after himself and was a great winger. On the subject of wingers I was surprised by Tony Galvin. Thought he was a great player in his own right but I wouldn't have recognised him from yesterdays parade. I was also surprised Gary Lineker wasn't there.

The push and run team was from the early 50s when Alf Ramsey played as opposed to the double team of 60/61.

There were one or two I might have expected to be there who weren't such as Steve Perryman who was a Spurs stalwart for years and I thought Jermain Defoe might have been there. Good to hear the Spurs fans chanting for Paul Gascoigne and Aaron Lennon too.

Over half a century since I first went to White Hart Lane. I've seen some horrible defeats there but it remains one of my favourite grounds.

I suppose they can genuinely sing Spurs are on their way to Wembley now.

Lots of fond memories for me at WHL saw my first live Burnley game there and used to work near by and nip round in my lunch break and watch a bit of their reserve games when played.

I would have added to any reception for Jimmy Greaves from my front room. Frighteningly good at what he did.

Jimmy Greaves visited WHL about 3 weeks ago with his family and friends...he didn't look very well I have to say..good luck Jimmy - what a goalscorer he was.

CT, I stand corrected. Whatever label may or may not have placed on the 60's double winning side, they were one of the greatest English sides and certainly left a lasting impression on me as an overawed kid growing up in that era.
Surprised nobody has passed comment on Mike England, especially given his links with a certain team down the M65. He was certainly a combative and commanding CH.

England looked in decent shape when he came out yesterday - must be mid 70s, think he was in the Blackburn team that won the FA Youth Cup in 1959.

Although Spurs were our great rivals in the 60's you could not help but admire their style and metropolitan confidence but we gave them a good run for their money and both sets of players respected each other. Probably the friendship of Blanchflower and Jimmy Mac helped but Dave Mackay was never respectful of anybody. We saw some great games between our two clubs and I have always been an admirer of their football. Today, I prefer their football to Chelsea and Utd and wish them well when they are not playing us.

Spurs haven't done that badly since the war. Title wins in 1951, 61, FA Cup in 61,62,67,81,82, 91, League Cup, 71,73,99,2008 Cup Winners Cup in 63. And just looking at that lot it is amazing how often success comes in years ending in 1 and 2. They even won the FA Cup in 1901 and 1921
