Lampard to Oxford United

Post by Holtyclaret » Wed Jun 28, 2017 9:03 am

After 20 years in the Oxford area I still have no affiliation to Oxford United. I find them a bit meh despite some recent and relative success in the last couple of years. Awful three-sided ground, all a bit souless.

Anyway, my boss who is a fan has it on good authority, via a Director than Frank Lampard will be their new manager.

A good appointment in my eyes and shows a work ethic in Lampard and realisation that you can't just walk into a top job and you need to earn your spurs. Something Ryan Giggs could certainly learn from.

Odds are apparently cut quite short now but lump on if you're that way orientated.

Was reported yesterday that they were talking to Lampard although Pep Clotet (Monk's number two at Leeds, and still there) is still favourite

My boss didn't mention him, he's slightly full of bs normally but seems to be 90%+ on Lampard. One of Franks best mates in the game is an Oxford Director.

Certainly Sky said yesterday he was having talks with them so he's clearly in for the job and is now second favourite with the bookies.

Do high profile players ever make it as managers in the lower leagues? I can't think of one in the Premier League era.

Guess it depends what you mean by lower leagues, but Steve Bruce had a long stint at Championship level before managing in the Premier League.

Hasselbaink won League 2 with Burton and when he left for QPR they were top of League 1

Good point but I could imagine Lampard being a little smarter and hard-working than most. At worst it would certainly be interesting to watch how he does.

I'm thinking League One downwards. Heres some from the top of my head.

Tony Adams - Wycombe
Paul Ince - Macclesfield, MK Dons
Teddy Sheringham - Stevenage
Edgar Davids - Barnet

While compiling this list I went onto Wiki to see how many Premier League players went into management, particularly into lower leagues - and not a lot do these days.

I guess it depends how you measure success but the much-maligned Alan Pardew did reasonably well at Reading and got the West Ham job on the back of it. He then had a decent stint at a Southampton despite the points deduction.

As I say, it depends whether anyone classes these as successes?

Di Canio at Swindon got results, but he allegedly ruined the club in the process

Agent Ince had an exceptional spell at Rovers. Not in the lower leagues of course but had them playing like it. Signed deep deep undercover agent Paul Robinson leading to the famous failed hack / miskick for the Ings goal, before agent Robinson was finally brought in from the cold.

I can see Lampard being a good manager.

Articulate, intelligent, I suspect studious and certainly well respected. If he's also a strong character, he's got a good chance and it's nice to see that he is prepared to learn his trade lower down the ladder.

Terry on the other hand would probably think he should start out as England Manager!

I want to see more English managers although their past glories shouldn't be the driver for the opportunities that are presented to them. Had Dyche had Lampard's playing career, he would probably have a top job somewhere.

usual definition of a star manager in the lower leagues : spend tons, bring in their old mates, players from their own country, etc etc. Usually doesn't work.

If Lampard can steer clear of that model he might do ok. Managing in the lower levels is hard with all kinds of skillsets you'll never have used before, surprised why so many players think it would be easy.

I tried a couple of years ago and nearly did some serious damage to myself.

Loved village cricket for a few years, great people and tours.

Holla if you want to share any away days, was gutted when reading didn't come up to the prem, like a home match.

You could argue Oxford have been down this road before when they gave a certain Mark Lawrenson his first managerial post after finishing playing. If memory serves me that didn't turn out too well, or last too long.

'I Lost My Life Savings On Lampard To Be Oxford Manager' sounds like a Half Man-Half Biscuit song title.

Absolutely not, I live and work just outside Oxford. My boss however is a huge fan and does know a couple of their directors, I have suspected though that he is full of **** for a while, just think he got carried away. Lamps was interviewed and will pop up elsewhere soon enough.
