Re: Centre Half
I would have him in a heart beat. Nice bit of aggression in his play, difficult to play against and excellent in the air. Perfect match for Ben.

Chambers fits in with the production line model, he's had a good couple of Premier League seasons and still only 22.
He's worth pushing the boat out for, I think.
Dawson's too similar to Mee.

Agree completely regards Dawson being too similar to Mee to be a `2`. Tarkowski, I would suggest, is the perfect foil for either, or as part of a central 3.

Re: Centre Half
Wether Tarky gets the nod initially or not the fact remains we will need to sign a central defender. We have all heard that signing players isnt as straightforward as it used to be and that is the fact of the matter as well as being in line with Burnleys policy of not paying over the odds for players. The truth of the situation is that Sean will need all the backing he can get,.this season will be difficult enough without unneccesary delays in the procurement of players The recruitment dept has known the fact that Keane would be leaving at the end of the season. I firmly believe we can establish ourselves in the Premier Divison if we as a club start believing we are a club of that stature. We by virtue of the location and size of the club will always be fighting the odds to attract players . Perhaps now is the time though for the club to be bolder than in the past

Dawson would be a good fit for me. He can also play right back which gives us much better cover than we do now.
Dawson has been excellent for West Brom for the last few seasons since we tried to buy him. Prior to that he had not had a great time there but he was only young when they got him from Rochdale.
Not sure how long he has left on his contract so hard to value. If he is in his last year or two then I'd say he is worth around £15m and I'd be happy for us to pay that.

Re: Centre Half
I genuinely feel, Tarks and Mee will complement each other perfectly.
It will also be interesting to see how Keane gets on without Superman next to him.

i also think tarkowski can do the job. unfortunately he is going to have a steep learning curve and most people probably wont give him enough time to adapt to the PL. he had like 3 starts last year? keane had 17 starts in the PL, then a full year in the championship, then a great year last year.

Forget about whether Tarkowski is ready - he is yet we still need competition in this position. I am more impressed someone is claiming to be my mentor. Everyone knows my mind is independent. After all, there were not many of us defending Brian Laws through thick and thin

Re: Centre Half
Struggling with the idea that the 6"3, right footed Craig Dawson is too similar to the 5"11, left footed Ben Mee. Dawson is more like Keane, but perhaps more physical and a touch slower and less refined on the ball.
Chambers is if anything more like Mee - he's a full back cum centre back who is barely 6 foot tall - certainly not domimant enough partner Mee.
Other options include Liam Moore (who has also been linked), Tomas Kalas as mentioned above, plus the lad at Celtic. But if we gamble a bit on a player less proven than Dawson, we might well look to bring in relatively cheap, experienced head to serve as additional back up, and let Kev Long go.

Turftalker a mentor, a well meaning one should be appreciated . Closed minds can at times lead to the danger of inferior judgements . 59 years experience of all matters Burnley FC may have some value . However I will tender my resignation from this board immediately and continue being a foreign correspondent for the Coventry Telegraph . To all the well meaning respondees to my humble observations about a replacement centre half thank you

Re: Centre Half
To be fair Tarky hasnt had much chance to show what he is capable of due to to the reliability of Keane and Mee in the past two seasons, but when he did play albeit in an unfamiliar midfield position he showed some comittment a trait Sean admires and demands . In the last two appearances however in his recognised role he did show he has a lot to learn ,a factor that could be costly in our difficult start to the season . That was the reason I would be in favour of buying Dawson

Add to that a degree of all round team complacency in the couple of games they played together and they were bound to look exposed and under par.

Yep I would take that . but if Ben gets injured early on in the season ( hope I am not tempting fate saying that ) would it not be prudent to act now in case the same pairing are expected to stand in again with no disrespect to either player. We all know the Premier League is an unforgiving league

As I said earlier in the post we need the club to act with some urgency to rectify the situation . They may be already in negotiations for all we know .At the fixtures launch a spokesman stated the clubs hierarchy had had a meeting in the West Midlands the day before to shift through a list of 19 to 20 players they were looking at .
Re: Centre Half
Seems strange that Boro didn't go for him after being on loan, or did they? I'd have thought, if he'd been a success there it'd have made sense to bring in a tried and tested player. Unless they didn't think he was up to the Premier League.warksclaret wrote:Tomas Kalas-young, good enough for Chelsea to sign in 2010, can play rb too, and contract up in 2018.Experienced international

Re: Centre Half
DC cannot speak on behalf of Middlesborough. However Bamford had a blinding season for them -won Championship player of season and scored a load of goals for them. They did not go back for him the next season and he was available as he was being touted around a lot of teams. I know they have him now but desperation in my eyes to pay around£10m for him. I suspect Kalas will not be expensive . Like to think BFC have done some homework on him.

Re: Centre Half
Yes Tarka will make mistakes because he is a ball playing defender, not quite in the calm Dobson mode but perhaps as potent going forward as in defence, he will take time to mature hence I'd like to see him in a back three or used in midfield when required.

Boro fan here. We did go back for him but he wanted to move the premier league. Regards Kalas, he was mainly used as backup, both at centre half and right back. He is better at cb.warksclaret wrote:DC cannot speak on behalf of Middlesborough. Reading the above, you would be mad not to go for chambers. We fell apart when he was out for 3 months. Chambers really surprised me how good he is at cb, he isn't right back. There wasn't much difference between Gibson and chambers. We enquiried about buying chambers before the loan but a 15m bid was turned down. Kalas is nowhere near chambers standard and Ayala is better also.

I am Claret and Blue through and through from 1958 man and not . I have left wedding receptions to go and returned home half way through our holidays to see the Clarets . Hope that proves one's allegiance.
Re: Centre Half
Is there any substance to this Dawson rumour? He's just had 2 really good seasons, key player, scoring goals, with a team who finished top 10. McAuley's about 40 and Evans is being linked with a move, can't see for the life of me why Pulis would let him go. And maybe he'd prefer living 2 hours up the road but when it comes to it is he really going to risk it for a relegation scrap? Just seems really unlikely, I'd be amazed if it happened.
I saw someone else mention it sounds like an agent creating a bit of transfer chatter to take into contract negotiations, seems far more likely.

Turftalker's Mentor - welcome to the messageboard. Share your views, but be warned, I hold no favourites and will be scathing in my criticism if I see fit. The deployment of my name in your ID will not make you immune from that
On the issue of a centre half, it seems to me Tarkowski will have to fight it out with another player, just as Mee's position is not guaranteed if he doesn't perform. I am a little more confident that Long is pretty much seen as a clear reserve, but then again if he continues to take his chance he should keep the shirt. Performance over name recognition is key.

Re: Centre Half
As always football is about opinions wether Gibson, Dawson, Kalas-Young or any other defender is the answer only time will tell. I would personally still try for Dawson , but football is now awakening from its close season slumbers thankfully with clubs returning to pre-season training. Hopefully Taylor will turn up at Gawthorpe tomorrow ready to be a Claret. However its a buyers market and I dont want the Clarets to be left behind again . Due diligence in regard to financial matters is admirable but a third season in the Premiership is the prize at stake. Whilst enjoying every minute of Sean Dyches tenure and hopefully for another ten years. Effort and fitness and the ability to run the legs off other teams will only work for so long ,a measure of quality is now needed for the coming season and that will inevitably involve financial outlay

Re: Centre Half
The reason I suggest Gibson is. Maybe I haven't been reading the right 'links' but nobody seems prepared to pay, what I think the last bid was of £15 million. I am quite happy to be corrected on that, but haven't seen anyone seriously linked with him since.
He recently made an England debut. His club were relegated. He'll want another bite at that apple. Not quite the same type of player as Keane but I've not seen anyone take a punt on him above that figure. Under Dyche he can only improve. He's certainly worth a punt at £18-20 mill. Just a thought.

It's kind of a no lose situation really isn't it? We know he is a good defender. Spurs. Yes we can't compete with that but can they guarantee first team football? They had one of the tightest defences in the league last season. Just seems a no brainer for me even at £25 million. We have replaced like for like.taio wrote:Spurs are being linked with him for 25m. Wages we can offset in a signing on fee. Seems logical as he won't want to be playing in the Championship after tasting England duty. Food for thought.
