Rangers out of Europe

Post by ClaretTony » Tue Jul 04, 2017 8:43 pm

They've been beaten by Progrès Niederkorn (Luxembourg). Is this an even worse result than Blackburn losing to Trelleborgs?

Trelleborgs are Swedish. Swedish players are decent going off their national team. Ask england.

We were in the Prinny (did we have a match the same night or the night after?) and Radio Lancs was doing a phone in about Ba*tards losing to Trelleborgs. Someone phoned up and the whole pub chanted Trelleborgs, Trelleborgs, Trelleborgs.

The response.............

I think we've hit a Burnley camp there

Dalglish was lacking as a manager in Europe, with Liverpool and rovers.

As English teams were banned from Europe for the entire duration of Dalglish stint as manager of Liverpool, it wasn't surprising that he had't any success with them.

He went back selling Torres, buying Andy Carroll and Suarez.
Not sure if he managed in Europe though.

Such a shame that. Perhaps one of the best Liverpool teams and they never had a crack at the European Cup. People may not like Liverpool but you just had to admire their teams from that period. Mainly a combination of Scots, Irish and English players and they dominated Europe.

It's about time Rangers and Celtic played in the English league. It's no wonder they are both rubbish in Europe with the standard of football alongside them in Scotland.

I reckon stick them in the championship in place of some of the nothing clubs like Burton and Brentford and see how they get on from there. Will prob be challenging the top 5 within 3 or 4 seasons

What do we want Scottish teams in the English leagues for? Have we forgotten how friendly they are?
Don't need them. Don't see why teams from the opposite side of the country should be forced to travel up there. Not fair on their fans at all.

Plus, quite enjoyable for the morale of our country on nights like this.

Out of interest.
How many teams are there in Europe who play in a major League in a different country?
I can't think of many.
Obviously there's Cardiff, Swansea, and Berwick Rangers.
Other than that I can only really think of Monaco, and that's a bit of a special case.

Was that result last night that much of a shock ?

2 tinpot countries, 1 3rd best and 1 4th best sounds fairly even.

I don't think you can compare Rangers loss to Rovers. Rangers are fresh back and have not really got a team together capable. Rovers were an established team of multi million players. Club size, it's a shock. In terms of players Rovers defeat at Trelleborgs is a far, far, far, far bigger embarressment.

There's quite a few teams that play in the wrong league or have done. Most seem to do it for one of two reasons:-
a) They come from a "tinpot country" next to a bigger one, or
b) They are on the border of two countries.

Celtic and Rangers aren't in category (b), so presumably the fans of Rangers that want to play in England and Wales see themselves as being in category (a). On last nights performance, I guess they are about Div 1 level at best. More realistically, I suppose Championship level would be fair given their present status,

I don't see a need for them to join. It would be preferable though to see a Scandinavian Premier League and a Benelux league to allow the better teams in those countries to compete financially. I'd pay to watch those (but have no interest at all in Spanish football).

Others that are in the wrong league: Vaduz (Liechtenstein) play in Switzerland now. TNS are in England (Oswestry). Newport, Wrexham and the mighty Merthyr Town (Go Martyrs). Strasbourg have flitted back and fore between France and Germany - but then, so has the border. Gretna did the opposite of Berwick. There's probably others - I've never really worked out what "Odd Grunland" was all about, for example, and I'd guess there are some in the former Yugoslavia.

I don't think it's fair to call Scotland a 'TinPot Country'. They are a proud nation and a proud people.

nil, it's a line I used to use on my Rangers-supporting friend all of the time. Question: What 2 clubs nicknamed Rangers are English but play in the Scottish League. Answer: Berwick and Glasgow. If you don't think that the average Glasgow Rangers fan isn't 100% Loyalist, and would die for the cause, then I think that you are sadly mistaken. They're more English than you lot are.

I'm afraid it's you that's mistaken the term you were looking for is BRITISH - not English.
They are - theoretically at least - loyalists. Loyal to the crown and the UK, but in no way do they consider themselves to be English.

They're "wannabe" English. It's why the highland regiments in the British Army were always the most feared by the Germans. They couldn't stand the sound of bagpipe music. I'm well aware of the difference between English and British. But the parts of Britain that aren't English still subscribe to the English code of ethics, stiff upper lip, and, above all, loyalty to the Crown.

I played for a rugby club in British Columbia once. Talk about wearing your love of the monarchy on your sleeve. At the awards banquet, nobody could smoke until the Queen had been toasted. Talk about your antiquated customs.
