We could have one of our slowest sides ever

Post by ablueclaret » Wed Jul 05, 2017 10:34 pm

unless the other signings inject some pace into the squad.

Our weakness is being pedestrian, we appear to be intensifying that attribute.

By signing Jon Walters, who is fairly quick, and Charlie Taylor, who is certainly not slow?

It's not done Anfield any harm.

premier league football is not a speed thing alone, yes, there have been quick sides like arsenal when Henry was king, but it is more a chess game thesedays.
Burnley have countered rapid teams effectively with a plan. Players like Boyd were no spring chicken, but he stoically went about his usiness for the cause and usually came out top on ground covered.
Dyche wants a team in the true sense, he has proved that his squads can make the grade, even with elderly footballers amongst the ranks.
Not really an issue for me about the lack of 21 year old 100 metre in ten second wingers, because we normally cannot cross for toffee when they hit the line.
We will be hard to beat, a few veteran campaigners added to the mix will pay dividends next season.
Plenty time left to add a few as well, more than confident this time around UTC.

Or football in general. You don't need particularly pacy players to be successful. As long as you can retain the ball and use it effectively you don't need speed. You can let the ball do the work and conserve energy. Of course we don't have that many players capable of doing that effectively, hence why we have to work extra hard and play a pressing game. What ablueclaret wants is immediate success, Messi'esque players and tikka takka. We're a club on the up but going through transition which will take a good few years to develop, assuming we manage to stay up.
I am an advocate of pace as it's something else in the locker as an alternative from Plan A, but if we can bring in technically better players. It does nullify the need slightly as we'll be able to retain the ball and be more effective a unit. Hence why I think Walters is an improvement. He has the guile and the technical nouse to know when to slow the game down, speed it up, hold the ball, overall just a more steady player, even at his age.

Its all part of master plan to start a walking football team, just a few players to get out the door first but then world domination awaits.

I disagree ABC, I don't think our weak area is lack of pace I think its ball retention, I also believe SD wants us to get better at this too. You can skirt around the pitch at a million mph all game but if you haven't got the ******* ball it doesn't really matter.

The speed we will miss is that of Keene. As well as being a very accomplished player, he has rapid pace for a Central defender hardly ever getting out paced by quick opposition players.

Have to agree with this and on many occasions he bailed out ben mee. Need to build up some height in the backline.
As for pace in the team Liverpool were one of thee quickest teams last year but got stunned with a fairly lethal counter attack by us as did a few teams. It's about how you go about counter attacking as opposed to having players who can run fast but we have brady JBG Gray who can punish teams.

Ablueclaret, This time last year you were writing similar negative headlines and posts.

Against all your predictions, the team were mid table for much of the season and we are now facing a second year in the Premier League. With several weeks to recruit new players and substantial funds in the bank account to make sure there are some quality signing....how on Earth can you write a headline like "We could have one of our slowest sides ever".

Your daily negativity is draining.

So here is a thought...."We could have one of our fastest sides ever". UTC!

Not much pace in, for example, 83/4. 84/5, 85/6, 86/7, 87/8. We then had the John Francis years, but let's resume, for the sake of argument in 94/5,95/6, 96/7,97/8...yeah you are right, one of the slowest sides ever

The first weekend aside, we were never in the relegation zone all season. That's a positive in itself. Ablue needs to see a positive for every negative. We're doing alright considering.

We may have the slowest side ever, however, we can always claim to have the 'fan' who will always be the quickest off the mark when it comes to crticism and finding fault with the club.

Speed is relative to the division you're playing in and teams/players you come up against, but to suggest this may be our slowest side EVER could not be more wrong and I would actually think the opposite based on the fact that players near the top of the league pyramid tend to be fitter and quicker than those towards the bottom.

e.g. these players from the 99 squad; Ronnie Jepson, Mitchel Thomas, Paul cook, Andy Cooke, Gordon Armstrong, Lenny Johnrose, Chris Brass, Paul Weller, Paul Smith are by far slower than anyone in the current squad.

I would even suggest that almost all of the current squad (inc Walters) are quicker than these 1st team players from the 2014/15 squad; Steven Reid, Matt Taylor, Mike Duff, Ross Wallace, Lukas Jutkiewicz.

August 2015/16 season AB is right again to slow not enough quality and a board and manager with no direction or commitment relegated by Christmas!!!!.
May 2016 AB is right although some how we managed to get promotion it was down to other bad teams and the mismanagement of the other teams!!!!.
August 2016/17 AB right again with his predictions poor quality team to slow not enough quality and a board and manager with no direction or commitment SD will be sacked by November team will be relegated by Christmas!!!!
May 2017 AB right again although we avoided relegation and SD still here poor other management and teams not good enough SD will be gone before pre-season.

Ah AB I see a pattern if you post enough mud at a wall eventually some sticks, but what poor way to build anything.
