I tell you one thing a Sean Dyche team has never been accused of. And that is playing too much pretty side ways football without getting the ball forwards.KefkaClaret wrote:A midfield of Westwood and Cork would be great fun. Re: Britt Assombalonga
I thought that Westwood was pretty good at moving the ball, sideways and back on occasion, and certainly forwards as well. I was pleasantly surprised.
Some of the frustration with our play, it seems to me comes from the periods of possession (which may be sideways and back) that end with a ball back to the centre halves, only to be launched up front.
That for me is where we really suffer in terms of possession, bypassing the midfield after having the ball in midfield. We need that extra quality on the ball to use it more productively and that quality further up the field (flanks or midfield) to turn the ball over and push us up the field.

Probably, neither Warburton nor Dyche owe watford any favours.claretblue wrote:Also his relationship with Warburton might just swing it in Clarets favour - hope so!

Re: Britt Assombalonga
But there's a theory to all of that, isn't there? The idea being to invite opponents to press us, before getting the ball forwards when we've got 2 centre backs isolated against our 2 central attackers. And it did work a fair bit last season, although I accept that we need to move the ball through the units a bit more when we get the chance this season. But we'll need better than Barnes as second striker, and perhaps a bit more from our wide midfielders to make that work.DCWat wrote:I thought that Westwood was pretty good at moving the ball, sideways and back on occasion, and certainly forwards as well. There is theory to it, Spice. Albeit quite a basic approach.claretspice wrote:But there's a theory to all of that, isn't there? I'm not advocating that we drop the long ball but as Dyche has said himself, he likes a mixed style of football. The ability to keep the ball better (Cork, McArthur etc.) would help with that, but as yet I don't think we've recruited those that will allow us to play a more effective mixed style of football.
Walters will help of course but there are, for me at least, two or three pieces of the jigsaw missing.

Possibly not though if Gray got injured then not much pace up top. Him, Gray along with Vokes, Barnes and Walters wouldn't be a bad choice of forwards.

Re: Britt Assombalonga
I don't get all this obsession with pace.We are playing football and most strikers can run over a short distance if necessary. Its not the olympics 100 metres.I would much prefer our strikers to be able to control the ball and hold it up and perhaps play someone in.

So his goals against Liverpool, Sunderland, Swansea, Palace, Boro etc. were that of a player with a rubbish first touch?KefkaClaret wrote:Hardly an opinion, more of a fact that his control is absolute rubbish.

Yes he has a rubbish first touch a lot of the time. Most people I know and many on here will agree to that.Doent mean he can't score goals,he can.He would be even better if he could control the ball.Spijed wrote:So his goals against Liverpool, Sunderland, Swansea, Palace, Boro etc. were that of a player with a rubbish first touch?

Re: Britt Assombalonga
I like this off Wiki, With Forest remaining out of the Championship relegation zone by virtue of a one-goal difference with Blackburn Rovers, Assombalonga's brace - one a penalty and the other an exquisite solo effort - either side of a Chris Cohen goal ensured that Forest retained their Championship status at the expense of the Lancashire club. He ended the Championship season as Forest's top goalscorer, having scored 14 goals from 20 starts and 12 substitute appearances. Made me smile.

The only thing that counts is the number of goals he scores whether that's from off his shins or wherever as long as it ends up in the back of the onion bag

Theoretically, but some of the greatest players of all time, did not rely on pace. Anticipation, reading the game, positional sense, ball control, ability to tackle and pick a pass are arguably greater attributes.Rumbletonk wrote:A fast player will beat a slower player to the ball
I'll give you 3 for starters: Booby Moore, Zidane and Bergkamp.
