I've just realised that Up the Clarets must be the only site I've looked at today that doesn't have a story about Cork running so I've written one that says as much or as little as any other.

It doesn't get more authoritative than that - confirmed on a message board!

No reason to doubt you Knutsford but a higher degree of certainty would be required to "confirm" it.

No reason to doubt you Knutsford but a higher degree of certainty would be required to "confirm" it.

n the past we've been a bit slow to commit to 4 year deals because we're so concerned about the impact on our finances of having players in the 4th year of a deal after parachute payments run out. But I think we've reached the point where that is a bit of a false economy - it means we are stuck trying to sell players after they've been with us 18months - 2 years, and only getting a proportion of their value, because they are out of contract the next summer. Of course, there will be occasions when the players we are signing are ambitious and want to limit their commitment to Burnley, or the odd example like Jon Walters who is the wrong side of 30, but it is definitely the right thing to do to get players on 4 year deals wherever possible. It is obviously a change in policy and well done to the club for it.

generally, all credit to the club for moving so decisively and getting this deal done early in pre-season. That's another welcome change.

Cork, number four, the metronome, sat in front of Mee and Tarkowski with Hendrick ahead, spraying passes out left and right, arriving late to the box Lampard-style. I'll have a bit of that. UTC.

Considering he's got 1 goal in the last two seasons that's a pretty interesting Lampard style.

Met Corky at the away game vs Swansea a few years back in the Championship under Laws
Nice guy - down to earth. I am very happy with this signing, he liked it at Burnley and that was before he met Sean Dyche! and now he seems very keen to come back so congrats to the Board and all involved.

Jack Cork is certainly not my cup of tea and the Swansea manager will more than likely be of the same opinion.

Cork has most certainly been brought in has a defensive midfielder, as he is possibly the most defensive type of midfielder I have ever seen.

He can be very frustrating, he offers and looks composed on the ball but offers little going forward and rarely feeds a through ball down the channels .

Is that a problem? We need someone to keep hold of the ball better. It was a big weakness last season. Sure - Cork isn't necessarily going to be spending a lot of time in the opposition's half but to find a player who does what he does AND is an attacking threat will cost a fortune and are, quite frankly, rare. Signing Cork will facilitate Hendrick (and Defour perhaps) to play further forward who definitely have attributes going forward.

Cork would be a fantastic signing.

Gives us so many options if this goes through.
3 at the back with Westwood and Cork in front of them.
Usual 4-4-2, with Cork and Jeff in the middle.
Even an old fashioned 4-3-3, highly unlikely, with Westwood, Cork & Hendrick. With two holding midfielders Hendrick would be able to carry the ball more. One of his main strengths for me but we don't see enough of it.

I can't see Cork being up to much in a 442, it has got to be a 451. He is not creative enough for a 442 and does not score goals

I think Cork is a good footballer and comfortable on the ball but was surprised by this signing. It must be with a view to different formations and getting Hendrick further forward.

I think that the signings of Walters and Cork together with the speculation of the Palace guy (apologies for forgetting his name) is about replacing the experience and matchcraft of Marney, Barton and Boyd - all (because of Keane) without dipping into the normal transfer budget. This has been a key aspect of our success under Dyche - finding a way to win or not to lose at this level is something that Hendrick, Brady, JBG and to a lesser extent Westwood are still learning - too my mind this is clever management, mixing skill, experience and potential to allow the club to grow

His ball retention is very good. I'm not too concerned whether he plays decisive through balls personally, just that he keeps the ball moving and doesn't lose it cheaply. Barton was very poor for doing that last season. Westwood was an improvement when he came into the team in the last month and Cork is similar. He'll be a terrific signing.

People seem to be forgetting that he played in a team that on their day play some superb football - he was an integral part of that. We've not beaten Swansea when he's played (3 out of the 4 PL games). One part of a cog and all that.

I said earlier in the thread, reference signing Cork "not for me".
Really liked him when he was here, disappointed when we lost him and sort of realised we'd been lucky to get a player of that quality for a time, but couldn't realistically expect to be able to keep hold of that standard of player.
I think the fact that I can now feel I can pick and choose on this shows how far Burnley have come and our expectations evolve with that progress.
Have to admit it's hardly a disaster, and I'll probably be eating humble pie when he's orchestrating our midfield.
We really are evolving.

I think Cork is a good player who has been undersold by a lot on here. The only real comparisons with Jones are that he retains the ball well, and that some fans don't see the value in it.

Dyche's system will be far more effective if we can keep the ball better. It means better movement, more space, and ultimately better chances. Someone like Cork gets few plaudits because they don't finish the moves, but that never tells the whole story. Aside from his ball retention I think he'll add a good presence to the midfield, he's got good experience and captained Swansea last year as well as being a decent all-round footballer. Fantastic start to the transfer window for us thus far.

Losing Keane also hastens the importance of this kind of player. Cork will add more of a shield to our central defence, particularly to the threat of counter attack. Keane's speed in reacting to danger was a strength we'll miss and I'd expect Cork to operate inbetween the defensive /midfield line.

On another interesting note, I've just realised that Paul Clement, the manager who has just sold him, used to be a PE teacher at the secondary school Jack went to. I haven't had the chance to check if there was any overlap in the times they were there though.
