It is but I was under the impression that with it being 9/10 months since his injury he was closer to fitness than he obviously is.

I would be happy for us to take a punt on him but not at those prices. I just hope that we have alternatives in mind.

It seems he or his agent was only interested in money and not playing Prem football. Serves him right if it goes pear shaped. Do we add to Gray and if so who ?

It's not just the alleged wages Middlesbrough are prepared to pay him it's also the fact that both Burnley and Watford appear not to be willing to pay the type of fee that Boro are prepared to

i still don't get the love-in for Gary Monk.
Sacked at Swansea, improves Weeds but when the crunch came he took them from in the playoffs, in April, to nearly men.
He won't get the smoggies up.

People suggesting Assombalong has just chased the money ahead of prem football.

I don't think he's ever had that choice to make as we've not had an offer accepted.

If Boro are his only choice he does rigjg to follow the money.

I'm not fussed we aren't pushing the boat out for him. A lot of risk with this one for me.

The thing is not all clubs make public what deals they may be involved in.
How do you know we haven't got bids in for strikers that have not been leaked.
Not all clubs choose to prostitute their players.

I honestly don't see why people are having a pop at him for choosing money over the Prem. If we offer £30k a week and they offer double then surely it's a no brainer. You'd think of yours and your family's future wouldn't you?

I am quite relaxed about us not paying as much as Boro' appear to have paid so not fretting about it but good strikers are in short supply and we do need more goals. Its not a great situation for us if we have no plan B as it looks we might need to keep Gray but then get nothing for him at the end of the season unless he signs a new deal which seems unlikely. I think if we keep Gray then we still need to add another decent striker and I hope we have something in mind because the options appear a bit limited given the money we are prepared to pay. I was shocked that Murphy cost £12m today.

Can't say I'm that bothered about missing out on Assombalonga - I said way back when this thread was pretty new that very few strikers of his ilk have successfully transferred to the Premier League unless they've gone up with a club. He''s got pace and power but no great finesse, and it takes time to adapt (as it did Andre) and that's made tougher by expectation and the need to adjust to new standings. At £15 million, he might have been decent value transfer fee wise in this market, but suggested wages north of 50k just aren't realistic for a player with his relatively limited CV, so we're absolutely right to move on from him.

In any event, I'm not absolutely sold by the idea that we need to replace Andre with a like for like, hang-on-the-last-shoulder pace merchant. I'd rather we looked for someone more in the Ings mould, which is why I'm if anything a bit more disappointed that Jacob Murphy, who looked to me like the sort of player who might have that sort of attribute, looks to be going to Newcastle for 12 million, although I accept that we couldn't have competed with Newcastle even if we'd wanted him.

The only worry is that its not immediately easy to see who might be available who could provide that bit of spark for us who is realistic. There are players like Lawrence at Leicester who have plenty going for them, but they're not so immediately exciting, and the loan market doesn't particularly seem to suit us for these sorts of players. Logically, we'd be looking abroad to places like France and Belgium where players with the sort of combination of pace, power and bit of unpredictability that we'd ideally want are more commonly found, but there's not been that much evidence of us targetting those markets so far this summer. Plenty of time yet though.

The time to adapt element may be more of an issue with an import from France or Belgium though, Spice.

I do agree that there is an advantage for a player coming up with a promoted team. It's pretty likely though that whoever we get is going to be required to hit the ground running.

Experienced Premier League players, unless in the twilight of their career, aren't in our market which really leaves youngsters, Championship or European targets, all who will have the same issue of lacking PL experience and needing to adapt.

Not sure if that is right. I can think of a fair few overseas imports in that powerful mould who have hit the ground running - Sakho and Valencia at West Ham, and the lad at Watford being decent examples. If anything, theyve then struggled to maintain an initial burst.

Abs the other point is that they tend to be better value. Which means theyre less of a gamble in the first place. If push comes to shove i'd rather hold Gray till january for the sake of 5 million quid than pay 5 million and 30 grand a week more for a kid from the Championship who has plenty of question marks against him.

I agree that there is likely to be better value to be had abroad. I'm not sure though that a European player is more likely to adapt to the Premier League than a player from the Championship. It's down to the quality of the individual. There are lots who have done it but perhaps as many who have failed, or taken a long time to settle.

If we were to look at someone as a longer term option to replace Gray, I'd rather we did that now than in January. Depending upon how the season pans out, the latter stages may be far from ideal for blooding someone as Gray's successor.

Wilfried Bony would be absolutely perfect for us. He has the combination of vokes and barnes attributes while still offering something different to them and gray. For me him or someone with similar attributes is exactly the type of player we should be looking at to combine with Gray or lead the line.

City are busy subsidising other players wages to get rid of them so they'll probably end up doing the same with him.

Dyche's poor record at signing strikers could be a factor putting off the likes of Assombalonga from signing for us. If Gray decides to go we could be in real trouble and end up with Juke mark 2 come September

As said above, if there's a possibility of subsidised wages it surely must be something we should look at based on attributes alone. My point is the type of striker of his mould is exactly the sort of striker we should be in for. Whether that would have been assombalonga or not is a different matter, and at 60k p.w I wouldn't be prepared to find out.
