If Andre hadn't scored three in half an hour against an incredibly weak Sunderland defence we'd be laughing our heads off at this.

I think its just the fact we dont have anybody else lined up is the worrying thing . I think the fee were getting is good but surely it should be 1 in 1 out at this stage . Not sell one of our star assets and not replace him . Not only that the timing isnt the bestGuich wrote:If Andre hadn't scored three in half an hour against an incredibly weak Sunderland defence we'd be laughing our heads off at this.

Re: Gray to Watford story
No-one knows whether we have a replacement primed ready to join us or not. However if we haven't then we are in a pretty poor state given there are very few names being suggested as being candidates worthy of consideration and there only being three weeks of the window left. Hoping we might identify someone who could be sold to us and hoping we don't suffer rival bids for them is a massive gamble. If we don't recruit a suitable replacement it would be ridiculous and would make our recruitment pathetic and bordering on sabotaging our season.
Letting Gray go to a potential relegation rival is bad enough but wimping out on Assombalonga now looks even more bonkers given what is now happening. I know lots of posters will defend anything and everything the club does but not having a replacement striker would be completely indefensible. I know Burnley can't afford to let Gray leave for nothing next year but we should never sell a player before we have the incoming first in the current situation we are in.
The Keane saga is another ridiculous example of how the club is so inept at times. There was no need to sell him before we had the incoming in place first and now we are relying on a CB untested in the Prem in Tarks, Long who wouldn't normally be a third CB at any other Prem team and Anderson who is not really been tested at any level to now partner Mee. Lowton has no-one challenging him for a place except Bardsley, no attacking right winger and no decent 3rd striker let alone a 4th striker at Prem standard.
Having said all the above I am sure we will recruit more incomings before the window shuts however my real concern is twofold. Firstly the incomings might not be of a good enough standard especially with regard to strikers (yes we now need 2 more) and secondly I am not sure SD will be around after Christmas if we don't recruit quality incomings by Sept 1st.

Re: Gray to Watford story
Gray is a pot-luck signing for them this season he may fire he may no but they can be pretty certain that given time to bed in they've got a player who will score at this level and who should do so for the next 3-4 years. Wish that we had such a luxury.
We're all brute force now.

Yes, that's a fairly accurate description of player power.Dyched wrote:Player power?? How? He signed a contract here and has a year left. It's now up to the club if they want to risk losing a fee by keeping him or make a profit on him. Andre Gray doesn't have to sign a new contract.

Bring in a couple of promising young strikers and few will be moaning.

Id say player power was downing tools and refusing to work and demanding a move with a few years still left on his contract.

That's the extreme. Usually these days if a player wants a move, they'll get it. It's not in a clubs interests to keep a player who doesn't want to play for them, unless they can afford to of course, which we can't.

What is England C?However, the former England C international made it clear he would not be looking to renew a deal which had just 12 months still to run.

Well he's gone with the usual platitudes leaving it impossible for any of us to know what has really gone on. Did we want to keep him? Did we make a serious contract offer? Did he want to stay? Who knows.
Now it's all about who we get to replace him. I'm excited, recent history is good with strikers.

Can I say it now.
Good riddance to bad blood. We stood by him during Twattergate and all he seems worried about is the cash. Glad he's gone, would have been a bad egg seeing out his contract.

"Bring in some promising young strikers and nobody will be moaning"
I can still recall some posters wetting themselves on this board over the last minute signing of Bamford saying what a wonderful piece of business it was even though his previous stint in the Premiership pointed to the contrary.
When people talk about young strikers they probably mean like Ginnelly so that we can send them out on loan to a Div 2 club when we really need an experienced striker at PL level for this campaign not 3 years hence.
The fact that we offered Gray such a lucrative deal to stay says that he won't be easily replaced (if at all in this window) which casts doubt on the assumption that the club has a ready made replacement lined up.

Nobody can blame him, I'm certainly not. Just pointing out that in pretty much every transfer these days it's all up to the players. Clubs, especially ones like ours, have little they can do about it if a player wants to leave, as Gray has all summer.Dyched wrote:Yes but the term "player power" is strong. The only chance we had was to pay him a lot more than he's worth, likely more than Watford are paying him.

Re: Gray to Watford story
Hi all, Watford fan coming in peace...
From what I've read so far, the general consensus seems to be you aren't too disappointed to see him go? From a WFC point of view, £11.5m for a player that has seemingly proved himself able to score in the PL is a great deal, and if it rises to £18.5m then he will have done enough to justify those clauses being activated. In a summer of crazy prices, it seems par for the course...
Does seem confusing that you've allowed him to come to us when we will be a team you are likely to be competing with but seems the offer couldn't be turned down...
Lastly, just to say don't lose heart - a week ago we were despairing as some of you are about our lack of signings - we only had Will Hughes and Chalobah and our defence and attack looked woefully short. In 2 days we have added a Brazilian wonderkid and Andre Gray and suddenly it all seems better. Hopefully Dyche does the business for you in the market between now and September to give you a chance. But it seems you will have to pay over the odds to get a striker just as you may think we have done...
Good luck for the season ahead!

Gray was garbage as far as I'm concerned. Nearly as frustrating as Akinbiyi to watch. That said, we'll struggle to get a half decent replacement in now.

Not bothered in the slightest about this. He didn't pull up any trees last season, never really took to Burnley like some of our ex-players did, has been whining about wanting more money, and the whole celebrity ego shiyte may have gone to his head a bit. Good deal too when looked at sensibly. The only slight concern is getting someone in sharpish but I have faith that it'll happen sooner rather than later. The real test to see where we are as a club is if we can attract someone who is an improvement over Gray, with potential

Knowing how Burnley do business I cannot for the life of me agree with you getting him for 11.5 million. No chance. Maybe 14 or 15 with a few add ons but there is no way we would agree to 7 million in add onsRookeryEnd84 wrote:Hi all, Watford fan coming in peace...

Just to be clear. I'm not bothered that Gray has gone. He was lazy and couldn't control a ball.
I, like others would have wanted his replacement in first. Unless Walters is his replacement?

He wanted 75k per week fuelled by his agent and probably girlfriend. We didn't offer that thankfully. He's now got it for 5 years. We were right to get rid but we do need a replacement and with pace. It's not exactly a glowing departure report on the official site.
