£10 million bid for Ryan Shawcross

Post by Chuckypad » Thu Aug 10, 2017 8:37 am

Haven't seen this on the board but The Sun are reporting that we've made a £10m bid for Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross.

I'd be chuffed to bits with him....big, horrible, dirty defender

Yes, he'd be a proper signing. Doubt ten million would be enough though.

Hope if this is true and goes through we remember Joe Gallagher fiasco.
Ryan has had back problems. Once a back problem; always a back problem.
Might be fine for sedentary work but not for a centre half. I would be wary of going ahead with this.
Although he did start 35 games for Stoke last season

If only we had a medical team along with some ex stoke players to check his fitness and give us some inside track on his performance levels and any decline hes had.

Aren't back issues notoriously difficult to assess? Fine one day, agony the next. I'm hoping we go for Dawson.

Even though Shawcross only has a year to go on his contract, Stoke won't entertain selling a central defender until they've signed Indi. Even then they might not sell him.

Very sensible of them.

One assumes that we have done some kind of due diligence on any player's desire to come to the club PRIOR to making an official bid. I reckon if we get a bid accepted he will be a Burnley player.

I'm guessing this is possibly a smokescreen to hurry WBA along into selling us Dawson.
I hope so anyway as Dawson gives us more of an edge from set pieces and is generally a better player.

Hopefully not, would prefer Dawson, however WBA are terrible to deal with and it will be last day of window 1 minute to deadline and they pull the plug as usual.

Amazing amount of people on here with inside knowledge into Shawcross's back.

If we do sign him - and I've no strong feelings either way- it will be interesting when he comes up against Fellaini and Aaron Ramsey! Think we should be grateful Ibrahimovic won't be at United!

He's a very good PL centre back from a team adept at surviving in this division. If there's a problem with his back it will be picked-up in a medical. Stoke are stalling on a new deal and want to re-negotiate his terms an conditions according to their forum.

We have done successful business with Stoke twice in this window already. There's a good chance that, assuming this is true, a deal could be finalised sooner rather than later.

Dawson's a good player but we have been down this route with West Brom before. Deal falls trough on or around the end of August and we have not got time to go after alternatives.

If Shawcross is available, is interested in coming and passes his medical then given the options available - he would be a very good replacement for Keane.

Have to agree. Dawson at the very least offers a real threat in the opponent`s penalty area, even more so than Keane.

Dawson is only 'more us' because he was linked a few years ago and someone dredged up the faintest link with Dawson watching Burnley once in his youth, and because of this a load of Burnley fans got all misty eyed, in the same way they do when banging on about signing Oliver Norwood because he's 'one of our own'. He's nowhere near as good as Shawcross is Dawson.

Shawcross would be a good signing for anyone from 5th down to about 8th.

For a team like Burnley he would be an unbelievable signing. I also firmly think that Shawcross going makes Stoke even more likely to drop, I think Hughes is making a real dogs dinner of trying to turn what WAS a highly experienced and solid Premier League squad into some kind of flair fashionista's.

I know a lad who has been a season ticket holder since the Icelandic days at Stoke.

He thinks Hughes is dispensing with the old guard who are 'bigger than him' in the dressing room. As I commented above he is also dead set on removing all the remaining Pulis-isms and trying to mould Stoke into a more attractive, possession based team full of sexy sounding foreigners (and....Berahino).

I would be stunned if we got him. It wouldn't surprise me for Pulis to take him to West Brom and us sign Dawson though.

Both would be amazing. Shawcross a leader, experienced and also a great threat from set pieces as is Dawson. Our squad would look strong if both joined along with Clucas, another winger and a striker . Pipe dream though perhaps.

Or maybe this is the window where Burnley shock their fans totally.

In respect to a lot of potential problems a medical can only assess a player at a current moment in time. As others have said back problems are notorious for being difficult to accurately assess and probability for a repeat occurrence at a later date is high. Once a bad back always a danger of a bad back.

I don't think any of the people that are writing it off as something that can be spotted at a medical and of little concern have any direct personal experience with back problems.

I think the signings of Walters and Bardsley where excellent and I have defended (no pun intended) our acquisition of quality players regardless of age. However, paying 10m+ for a 29 year old with a serious back problem in his history who has already showing signs of decline gets a big no from me.

When it comes to 10m+ signing we shouldn't be going after the players that other clubs want rid of we should be going after the players they are bringing in to replace them. Players like Bruno Martins Indi at 7m. I've no doubt Shawcross would want a long contract as well.

Hefty outlay of money being shifted to a competitor, little to no resale value, evidence of decline and injury issues. The first piece of news about our transfer business that has left me feeling deflated.
Steve-Harpers-perm wrote:Nixon just tweeted we must have had some encouragement and are very much in for him.
I don't doubt that for a minute, selling a player they don't want for 10m, reducing their wage bill and using 7.5m of that to pay for a player they do want. They must be clapping their happy little hands together and lining up Crouch to replace Gray as we speak.

Would much prefer Dawson but I think we've seen the writing on the wall and put our efforts elsewhere.
Dawson's played in ever pre-season game, WBA live off set piece goals and he's scored 10 goals for them in the last three seasons, mostly from corners and free kicks. I've no idea why they would sell him.

I mentioned Dawson, but I was secretly hoping for Kyle Barltey as a domestic incoming. I'm annoyed that he signed a new long term contract with Swansea. He has been put on my naughty list for doing that instead of thinking about coming here.

No Chrismas presents for Bartley this year, he has been a bad boy.
