It does show you though how far as a club we have come when (let`s say for argument`s sake) we put a 10-20mill bid in for last season`s Championship`s top scorer and a fair section of supporters welcome the news with a solid `meh`. I must say I`m not skipping around my living room upon reading the news.

The issue is, barring slight variances, our front line looks like something out of a cloning laboratory. There seems to be very little scope for variation. IF a 4-5-1 or 4-4-1-1 game plan comes off then all well and good BUT where is Plan B if we need to come from behind or slightly tweak the formation to alter the course of a game? If Barnes or Vokes had have been sold and not Gray, then the purchase of Wood or someone of his ilk would have been absolutely fine. Palace away last season was superb as we battered them with Vokes & Barnes then hit them with the power, pace and finishing of Gray when needed. It looks like we are NOT going to have that option.

My fear is (if we don`t by a Grayesque striker) that we will be making it a lot easier for opposition to set up against us as they will have no fear whatsoever of their backline being stretched by pace or by a ball being played through (hopefully by Defour!) for a pacy striker to run onto.

VERY early doors though and regardless of who lines up for the Mighty Clarets against Chelsea, I will be supporting them from afar, with a beer in one hand and fingernails being bit on the other.

COME ON BURNLEY!

p.s. apologies REECEY1987. No intention of referencing your post.
Whilst I don't disagree with this, I fear the likelihood of us signing a Grayesque striker is slim. I just don't it's the SD way. I think he is much more comfortable with a 4-4-2 and lumping long balls into the oppositions area in which case a Wood type player alongside Vokes makes sense.

This was very much the case last season when he had a powerful, pacey striker in Gray but failed to utilise him.

Pursuing Chris Wood reeks of panic and desperation.
Hasn't SD shown interest in signing him before though?

Is there any chance we'd sign both Chris Wood and Shane Long? I'd be okay with that.

I did suggest this on the Shane Long thread before I knew we'd bid for him and was shot down.

Didn't see that. Would make sense. I could see those two playing very well alongside each other. Factor in Vokes and Barnes and I'd be very happy with our striking options.

If we are going to play with a 5 man midfield including two wingers and then a lone striker leading the line (as we probably are) then Wood is absolutely ideal for that role.

Goalscorer with decent pace, works hard, aggressive, physical presence and pretty mobile too. Yes he might be similar in some ways to Vokes but I'd say he is a bit more mobile and quicker.

I do find it strange that people are bemoaning the loss of the Championship's top scorer from 2015-16, but these same people think that the Championship's top scorer from 2016-17 isn't good enough for us??

I don`t think people are suggesting, on the whole, that Wood isn`t good enough. I`m certainly not. He could well be a bloody good `un. It`s just the like for like for like for like nature of our forward line that concerns a lot of people with seemingly, no way to (little) mix it up when the need arises.

It comes across to me that at least half of the people who have posted on here have never seen him play. Certainly not more than on the odd highlights programme. We've had a few strange threads recently. Such as people preferring us to beat Rovers than get 3 more points on the board vs Spurs and stand a better chance of staying in the Premier League.

I just think that pace up top is not a necessity as long as we've got strikers who can get into good positions and finish. Alan Shearer wasn't particularly quick.
What we do need though is pace put wide to get behind full backs and deliver quality into the box.

Shearer definitely wasn't quick. But he could score with either foot and was one of the best headers of the ball that the Premier League's ever had.

We did, for the most part, fail to use his pace BUT Dyche did sign him (reacting to a poor start to the season?). Is all this Ings talk, merely talk or is there something in it? We DID play some lovely stuff with him in Dyche`s first promotion season. Dyche did though inherit Ings and couldn`t fail to play him. A mixture of THAT team at home with the Palace one from last season away and it could be, to use parlance I never thought I would use, gravy.

,

I think people worry because, without that pace, there is no legitimate `out ball` to alleviate pressure (when we`re under the cosh). Your second point is spot on and with a confident Brady and hopefully Guudmundsson we certainly have that.

If you look at Wood's goals from last season there were only 3 headers. He's definitely Mr Johnny-on-the-spot who just seems to find himself in the right place at the the right time. Obviously we'd need to give him the service but he's very different from our other strikers. At 25 he looks a great prospect for being the next in our production line.

The top scorer in the Premier League for the last two seasons isn't renowned for his pace.

He plays up front on his own with attacking, creative midfielders quick to support him.

With the likes of Brady, Hendrick, Gudmundsson and Defour we could do something similar.

Yep, as I've mentioned earlier in the thread, that's very much how he is. He's just there all the time to nick a goal. He's a handful as well as he's pretty strong on the ball.

There's a difference between negotiation and being downright insulting. Imagine if Everton bid £12m for Keane in the summer. You would be angry. Our frugality has benefits but it also costs like it did with Hendrick. We could of probably got him for cheaper if we didn't bid around 7 times only gradually increasing the offer.

Why will our max be £15m, because we don't think he's worth it or because we won't spend so much.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see us spend more than that in a player in either this or the next window.

So why did Watford only offer £8 million for Gray to begin with? Using the same arguments that was just as insulting wasn't it?

What weird logic do you use to think Derby would have been happy to take less for Hendrick?

And what makes you think we are any different to any other club?

I'd suggest 3 seasons out of the last 4 in the Prem for a club of our size suggests we are almost the perfect role model in football.

Derby would have happily taken less for Hendrick if we didn't bid for him 7 times increasing the bid ever so slightly before panicking on deadline day and offering £10m. You can go back and read Derby's opinions on it and even they believed he was only worth around £6m.

I do believe Chris Wood could be a good acquisition, he is a finisher and that is what we need, there was only 12 players managed over 15 goals last year and by my reckoning 8 of them finished in the Top 7 and 4 were from teams around us, if he cost £18-20 mill and he hit 10-15 goals people would say he was worth every penny.

Whose opinions? Their message board posters'? As we see on this site, message board posters do not in any way reflect the Club Board (the ones really in the know and the ones that matter)'s opinions.

Based on last seasons performances he's worth far more than £6 million. Btw, it's only the opinion of their supporters. And like the majority on here, both you and me included, we know bugger all about how football negotiations work.

Watford got Gray for £11.5M, not a mile away from the £8M Watford apparently first bid.

So how come we are about to embark on another PL season if the club don't know what they are doing?
