I watched this guy in a poor New Zealand team at the Confederations Cup. He has something about him. Intelligent off the ball, really attacks crosses, instinctive finisher and for a big lad has pace (see goal against Venkys last season) and a shot on him.
With crosses like we had on Saturday, he'd relish it. I'd not be adverse to signing him, but I'd still be hopeful of a pacy winger/striker to mix it up as well.

I see he scored in their opening game of the season. Will be interesting to see if he plays tonight or picks up a niggle.

Almost like a straight swap for Gray money wise.

Not the worst thing in the world. Although I feel like we need some pace up top.

And apparently missed a pan full of chances in their 2nd league game on Saturday

Not against him signing, but even in today's market £20m seems a huge fee for him.

I just hope there's still something left to get a centre half and a bit of pace into the attack.

Sorry but Chris Wood in my opinion (only mine) is not good enough for The Prem. Lack of pace, most of his goals are tap ins (apart from the one against us for Leicester.
We are in need of a different style to him, Vokesy etc. Someone with a quick turn of foot.
I don't know who that is but Lucas Perez fits that category except for his large wages.
Chris Wood NO thanks!!

For balance, I can't name a striker in history who doesn't have the odd bad game.

I'm still amazed that we judge players on what opposition fans think of them.

I was a fan of Chris Wood when he was at Leicester, and he's a good player.

Of course he is not worth £20 million, but bearing he's the top championship goal scorer and the prices at the moment, its not as ridiculous a price as it probably should be.

Id take 20 tap ins.. Tends to suggest he's in the right place an awful lot of the time
He does have pace, anyone who says he hasn't, obviously has not seen him play, but don't let the facts get in the way of slagging a player off, even before he signs.

As usual, I'd caution against taking the quoted £20 million fee as gospel. If that includes all the add-ons, supplements for us surviving this season, etc. with a much lower basic fee, then it becomes far more doable.

As for what else should be left in the pot cash-wise, even after Wood at £20 million, we'd be pretty much breaking even for our summer business. I hope and expect there's somewhere close to £50 million (at headline, maximum fees) left in the kitty. We were being extensively trailed as interested in a winger and centre back even before Gray left.

I think Wood fits the bill as far as Dyche is concerned otherwise
I doubt we would be considering offering 20m.

Not sure whether he and Vokes could play together.
They'd probably get in each others' way.

Don't think Dyche wants to risk an overseas player so
it looks as if we're going all out to get Wood.

20m for a player who has limited Premiership experience sounds like a lot to me.

If it's Wood then so be it, would have preferred a "10" type but there you go. Should be enough left to get someone in to provide serious competition to JBG and, to be at 1st September, with no better option than Long as immediate back up to Mee/Tarkowski would, frankly, be negligent.

I saw the same article in this mornings Daily Mail and I went white. I can't believe for one second we'd bid £20m for effectively a Championship player. I was no great fan of Andre Gray but in all honesty I'd prefer him over Wood.

My thoughts exactly Skipton. To not get another CB capable of starting straight away in the PL if needed would be as negligent as having only 2 centre midfielders last time we went down. Possibly worse given the progress we have made since and the money we now have.

A number 10 or a quicker/tricky striker is also still needed, i.e. one that might get somewhere like 15+ goals a year like Gray would have this time imo. Sam, Ash, Wood are 10/12 at best and that is if they start most games.

This would complete the spending of the outgoing's (Keane and Gray) then we still have our original planned funds to spend on the other players we need I think at least 3 more

Still on reserved judgement re Woods - but I have to trust Sean, he has hugely overachieved so far at the club - as I have said before still a lot of worst case scenario planning for us - if we go down we have 3 proven championship strikers for the season after to come back-up - if we stay up and he fails to set the prem standard we can sell at a nominal loss to the Championship

NZ's international games are usually played at the same time as ours - next two are the 1st and 5th of September during the international break. It is a hell of a trek though.

You don't think Vokes will get 15 goals this season? He got 10 last season despite not getting a lot of minutes and he's already got 2 after his first game this season. I can see him getting to 15 goals if he stays fit.

If it starts going over £20 million for Wood we need to look at other options.

I would look at Sam Gallagher who was on loan at Rovers last season.

21 years old 6'4" good in the air and on the deck and very quick.

35 starts and 11 goals at Champ level is good going in a relegated side.

Obviously a lot "greener"than Wood but huge amounts of potential especially coming from the Southampton academy.

Derby after him on loan supposedly as transfer fee too high for them.

Its not as if Wood is proven at Premier League level and a massive risk at £20 million whereas Gallagher could actually turn out to be a bargain.

People need to get real on prices and availability of PL strikers. Sure £20m is daft money for Wood, but who else is there?

Last season three players apart from Gray hit nine goals, Negredo, Antonio and Sigurdsson. Along with Big Sam, Walcott, Deeney and Pedro hit ten.
Deeney is the only remotely realistic target there with his Dyche connection and probably he will on the same dough as Gray anyway.

Between 11 & 15 goals you've got Firmino, Giroud, Vardy, Mane, Coutinho, Vardy, Son, Llorente, Benteke & Defoe. Pretty safe to say we won't be signing any of those guys.

So we have to take a punt on an unknown import or top Champ striker. Or maybe someone out of favour like Lucas Perez at Arsenal however he cost £17.5 million and is just as big a punt as Wood as he made two starts and scored once last season . We would have to match his wages and offer the usual five year deal. So probably not a runner.

If Wood is the player that SD wants and he'll fit into our wages structure, we should pay whatever transfer fee it takes to get him. It's not like we're strapped for cash at the moment.

So we will pay 20m plus for wood and either him or Sam won't be starting most games. Sam is in red hot form so he will start. We need a proper number 10 that can do what hendrick does but better.

The scariest thing about this thread is how eager some posters are to spend 20mil on one player.

Just to put the amount in perspective, 20mil is practically doubly the current transfer record of the club. Or to put it another way, 20mil is Jack Cork + Jeff Hendrick (and probably + Jonathan Walters).

Is Chris Wood really worth the equivalent of those two or three players to us?

It's no wonder that transfer fees are rising if that is the general consensus of value for money. If we are interested in Wood and we do go on to pay in the region of 20m for him we might as well tear up any false notions of sensible spending and prudent financial management.

Transfer fees have been increasing rapidly this summer so if we want the quality that we need to compete in the PL, those are the prices that we have to pay. We can't pretend it's not happening or we'll be left behind.

With up to £50m received for Keane and Gray, there is money there to be spent and, if the player's wages are within our structure, the transfer fee doesn't really matter (within reason). It's no good having all this money if we're not able to spend it on players that the manager wants.

That is how the market has gone - what you could get for £10 million two or three seasons ago now costs £20 million, that is just how it is. Wages are ordinarily what kills us in deals for proved PL strikers, Wood should fall within our budget wage-wise so I would be more than happy with this.

20m is a lot of money, even in this day and age. Leeds are holding out for more money because they can, not because he is worth it

If you were to look at a showreel of Sam Vokes' goals there would also be a whole host of tap-ins, created by his movement. No doubting that Wood is a decent Championship striker with a good frame, but we've got the exact same type of player, one who bagged two goals against the Premier League champions after ending last season on fire. Vokes is now proven int he Premier League. Wood isn't.

For me, Vokes and Wood are too similar, and Vokes isn't poor enough to require replacing.

Wood seems to be all right footed
All of his goals in 2016/2017 season were scored with his head or right foot
Now if I'm spending 20 million I'd like a player scoring with his head left and right foot.
Just an observation.

If I'm spending £20 million plus on a forward, I'd like him to have a different name to that of Chris Wood.

If we can get Wood for roughly the same money we got for Gray I'll be delighted. I love Vokes but Wood is the better player. Just as good a goalscorer but with more physicality. He'll thrive under Dyche.

If SD thinks he's a piece of the jigsaw squad wise (not talking replacing others here) then that is good enough for me. Later on down the line, if we have injuries and suspensions affecting our forward line, it could be £20m well spent if we are not dragged into a relegation battle.

And anyway, it's paper talk. We won't be telling journos what our next move will be, they are just anticipating it.

For 20 million I want him to score with his knee, his shin, his heel, his nose, his arse and any other appendage that won't result in a hand ball.
