Re: League Ladders
"I think the 19 teams in the Scottish second is right, however. From memory, they had 19 teams in there for years until Ferranti Thistle, renamed to Meadowbank Thistle because of anti-advertising rules, came in in the seventies"
What about Clydebank - when (and why?) did they join the league - did they drop out again when Meadowbank came in?

Re: League Ladders
It's not a standard abbreviation of Nottingham. Notts is an abbreviation of the county and that's the other team Notts County. Nottingham Forest are and always have been Nottingham Forest which can be abbreviated to Nott'm but not Notts. The people there refer to Notts County Football Club simply as Notts. They have every right to get wound up when people can't be bothered to get their name right.dsr wrote:Probably because they get so wound up about a pretty standard abbreviation of Nottingham, that we might as well wind them up a bit further by misspelling Forrest?
Re: League Ladders
Never in my whole life have I heard someone say Nott'm Forest. It's pretty much unpronounceable. Obviously the fans of Notts Forest can get wound up just as much as they like about the city name being abbreviated, just as can the fans of Man Utd and Man City, Wolves, West Brom, and Barlick Utd. It's just that Forest fans are the only ones who do get upset.ClaretTony wrote:It's not a standard abbreviation of Nottingham. Notts Forest fans can choose to like the name or to dislike it, but they have no legal right to insist I use all five syllables of the name.

Because Notts is the team who play on the other side of the river, it's as simple as that. I always try to get names right, I think it is courteous to do so.dsr wrote:Never in my whole life have I heard someone say Nott'm Forest. It's pretty much unpronounceable. Is it ok to abbreviate Blackburn to Barstewards ?ClaretTony wrote:Because Notts is the team who play on the other side of the river, it's as simple as that. I always try to get names right, I think it is courteous to do so.

Re: League Ladders
It is courteous. But not to the extent of using all 5 syllables - I seldom say West Ham United, I seldom say Manchester United, I seldom say Wolverhampton Wanderers, I seldom say Nottingham Forest, I use abbreviations to all those names. And I refuse to attempt to say Nottm Forest, and I treat this board more as spoken conversation than printed, so I will continue to use the common abbreviation that was universally used until not so many years ago until the Forest fans decided they were getting too much confused with the County fans.ClaretTony wrote:Because Notts is the team who play on the other side of the river, it's as simple as that. Re: League Ladders
Wow. Memories! I used to collect these from match magazine as a kid. I've honestly just emailed them now to ask for this season's for nostalgia purposes.
Re: League Ladders
Great memory. I used to get Valiant and Victor. Burnley were always too of my league too! Must have a look in the loft. Must have one at least.
