Re: Abdul majeed waris
This smacks of last minute desperation and an indirect desire to tick the "we are looking in Europe" box to appease the fans. It also highlights the fact that we have done nothing in this window to add pace and creativity to our forward options, despite the plethora of targets we could have pursued.
We need pace, but we shouldn't be in a position where we are happy to sanction the spending of a significant amount of money on a player simply because we failed to recognise and address that obvious need earlier in the window, when we had more options and prices where cheaper.
Speculative punts are players like
Tom Lawrence to Derby for 5m, possibly rising to 7m
Diego Rolan to Fulham for 5m, in process
Sam Larsson to Feyenoord for 3.5m
Quality additions are players like
Jose Izquierdo to Brighton for 13.5m (maybe)
Steve Mounie to Huddersfield for 11.5m (definitely)
We seem to be going for speculative punts with quality addition prices, and that has nothing to do with the current market prices. All of my examples are from the current window.
The fact that his work permit isn't guaranteed is also a big concern. A more important consideration are the articles suggesting that he has the highest wages in Liga 2 at 70K Euros. If he is actually on anything like that, and he is asking for anywhere near that figure in wages, we could be looking at bringing in an unproven player on an expensive long term contract. We have done well to ship out players that where soaking up wages in return for little to no contribution. It would be a shame if we started loading up on expensive punts again. Waris has the makings of an expensive punt.
Of even greater concern might be his attitude.
Guingamp winger Jimmy Briand tackled Waris and the Ghanaian was not given a foul, so he reacted by tackling the player who had taken him down earlier in a bizarre way, which resulted in a straight red card.
The accident earned Waris two games suspension but LFP’s disciplinary committee extended his suspension to six games following his reaction on the sidelines which saw him kicking the water bottles before leaving the pitch angrily.
At least he is in shape
Celtic and West Ham target Abdul-Majeed Waris has finally turned up for training at relegated French side Lorient after a one-month absence, GHANAsoccernet.com can reveal.
All told, this guy looks fast, so fast I hope he runs right past us and signs for somebody else, anybody else.

If they have maybe you should contact Dyche and Co as you seem to know it all about one of their targets. Maybe you should put yourself forward as head of European recruitment.

Had anyone ever heard of him before he came to Huddersfield and how can you say he's definitely a quality addition two games in, looking at who he was up against?

I do think you're assuming a knowledge of the club's transfer approaches that you don't really have. How do you know what the club has done? I know the club doesn't make many public announcements about who they're after and how much they're willing to pay, but just because we don't hear about them, doesn't mean they're doing nothing.
Look on the bright side - usually the complaints are that there's a ten days left in the window and we haven't signed anyone. Now, the complaints are that there's 10 days left and we haven't signed everyone we could possibly asked for. Give them credit for that!

Let's hope he doesn't need a work permit, then! I doubt the new stricter appeals panel would be impressed. Again, I find it impossible to believe that we'd seriously waste significant time on this guy if we didn't believe we had an almost guaranteed chance of getting him a work permit.
This isn't a Luton Shelton situation (that was a loan, wasn't it?), its a deal on which we'd spend something like £10 million quid at a time when we've an awful lot more bargaining power to look elsewhere.
The club aren't idiots when it comes to things like this - whatever else you think about the club, they tend to do their homework on potential signings.

Re: Abdul majeed waris
During an update on the England Commission, The FA Chairman said the Home Office has agreed to a “fundamental reform” to the existing work permit regulations, to ensure only the most talented non-EU players meet new criteria.
The new requirements state that non-EEA (European Economic Area) players will have to meet a minimum percentage of international matches played for their country over the previous 24 month period, as determined by that country’s FIFA world ranking.
No exemption for Commonwealth countries unfortunately.
I suspect Wood would need to play close to 100% of International games if he were moving to the UK for the first time in order to get a work permit.

I agree. Burnley FC won't even spend money on the back of the Bob Lord Stand to spruce up the facade, just to appease the fans, and that would probably cost £50K to spray paint, if that.Colburn_Claret wrote:I only read the first paragraph.

I don't understand why people suggest that signings are an act of desperation - there's still over a week of the transfer window left, we aren't 'desperate' for another forward and the club will put in a lot of groundwork before making an offer for any player.
When people say that this 'smacks of desperation' I assume they really mean 'I've never heard of this player'.

Your previous example of Mounie was ridiculous.Spijed wrote:No different to Huddersfield's signings.
Mounie scored 14 goals in Ligue 1 last year, in a poor team.
Kylian Mbappé scored 15, and he's on the verge of what would have been a world record fee had Neymar's contract not been bought out.
Just because your limited football knowledge doesn't stretch to including the top 10 goalscorers in one of the major European leagues, don't call everyone else.

Not aware of anything that went awry in the homework with either Hennings or Ulvestad. They were both calculated gambles that didn't work out on the pitch but there were no issues at all that I'm aware of off the pitch.joey13 wrote:You mean like they did with Grosicki , Hennings, or Ulvestad.
The same applies to Defour.
Grosicki is a bit more arguable, but there's a big difference between not becoming fully aware of a player's gambling debts until the last minute, and not doing some basic legal diligence on whether someone is likely to get a work permit - something a suitably qualified lawyer could no doubt tell you overnight without needing to actually talk to or meet the guy in question.
Re: Abdul majeed waris
The club are damned if it do and damned if don't.
If we don't sign anyone everyone moans but God help us if we actually bring someone in.
We have fans complaining about the Wood signing because, in their expert opinions, he's "not good enough", even though he's scored more in a single Championship season than any of our recent strikers (Jay Rod, Ings, Austin, Gray).
Now we have fans moaning about a lad they've never heard of, nevermind ever actually seen play! For all anyone knows he could be a world beater. He might not be but who knows. I'd trust SD's judgement a bit more of I were you.

Edit : Just been notified it was Helsingborgs IF after not acquiring a work permit. He signed for Sheff Utd two yaers later.
On a totally unrelated point ironically the best player on the pitch that night by some distance was Marc Pugh in amongst a host of triallists.
Admittedly we hadn't seen much of him apart from clips of a relatively successful loan spell but he was excellent that night and you could tell he had something about him.
It is funny that we were immediately put right by the various "youth team experts" on here that he wasn't good enough as a statement of fact.
We accepted our inferior knowledge as that was the first time we had seen him.
Cotterill was obviously watching something else as you could tell the lad had real talent or maybe he just didn't fit the "cotterball blueprint"
Well done Marc

He could be a Mahrez or a Dane Richards (who I watched in Vancouver weeks before we signed him and could tell he was rubbish).
Worst case scenario we go down. Best case scenario we win the league. More likely he is someone who will be a sub and get a goal or two, and if he really kicks on he could start. Seems OK to me.

Spot on. As far as I am aware he has played 3 seasons in Ligue 1 for two different clubs and got nearly a 1 in 2 scoring record (I bet many were sub appearances too).CharlieinNewMexico wrote:Exactly this. All of you going on about "unproven League 2". Lorient we're in Ligue 1 last year. He scored

Thats fairly tidy. Premier League defences are far better but it is promising. A far bigger risk is his injury record, meaning he has few games on his CV for his age, but I will trust the club on that one.

I would hope the club have taken significant legal advice on his work permit from a top immigration lawyer, on the face of it he doesn't stand a chance in being granted one.

Yeah the work permit was what I was getting at. I remember being gutted about not signing Shelton.billyhamilton82 wrote:You mean he will play for us against Accrington Stanley and bang in a hat trick before signing for Sheffield United
Well done Marc

that article only talks to Onazi's rejected application. It doesn't provide any content on Afriyie Acquah at all, and on that basis I presume it went ahead and got approvedVegas Claret wrote:I doubt we'll get a work permit after reading this

The point Vegas was trying to make was that an African current international's work permit was denied, I think.

A lot of posts on this thread today. I've been out - can anyone briefly summarise the latest? Or is there no real news?

It certainly isn't a Luton Shelton situation, nothing like it. There was never a chance of him getting a work permit but he didn't actually need one if we'd have gone down another route.claretspice wrote:Again, I find it impossible to believe that we'd seriously waste significant time on this guy if we didn't believe we had an almost guaranteed chance of getting him a work permit.
Have to totally agree spice, I don't think the club would take this as far as it seems they have if they weren't very confident of getting a work permit, in fact beyond confident. The wp rules are a lot tighter now and we will have done our homework prior to making any bids.

According to the Daily Mail, which has been bang on about a lot of our business this summer, we are set to win the race at £9M.IndigoLake wrote:A lot of posts on this thread today. I've been out - can anyone briefly summarise the latest? Or is there no real news?
