Hash Browns

Post by Bin Ont Turf » Sun Aug 27, 2017 12:05 am

Does anyone have these with an English breakfast?

The reason I ask is that my favourite tele programme is back (Masterchef) and in a skills test they had to make hash browns, crispy bacon and a poached egg.

I've only ever had hash browns once in my life, and I don't like them. They don't belong on an English fry up breakfast for me.

I've made rosti's before for meals after breakfast (I haven't had breakfast since I was a child).

My question is, do you have hash browns with your breakfast/fry up?

Yes. But I wouldn't lead with this question if you are serious about losing your virginity.

I always considered Hash Browns an Americanism don't mind them but wouldn't consider them part of a traditional Breakfast though. I used to love the bubble and squeak my mum used to make with Breakfast with the left over veg from Sunday Dinner would that be traditional part or just a good way of having no waste.

I agree with the OP, they are awful and in fact almost inedible, but not as inedible as the half-time snacks at Espanyol when I went... Sunflower seeds in a paper cone.

American fries are good for breakfast. Boiled potato pieces fried in butter cooked on the griddle with onions until crispy. Great with eggs and hot sauce.
Has browns are rostis, as mentioned above.

Potato for breakfast is just wrong. Missus likes Hash Browns but not for me. I prefer to do my fried mushrooms, eggs, sausages, black pudding, bacon and beans on a Sunday morning.

Snobs.

The best bit about a McD's breakfast is the 2 extra hash browns I order.

In my eyes you're more of a criminal if you leather your breakfast with tomato sauce.

Spot on. Potatoes, in any format, have no place on a breakfast plate

Proper hash browns are nice enough (i.e. Rosti) but though macdonalds serve a perfectly passable "own version" they have no place whatsoever with a full English
Any of the following are acceptable
Eggs, bacon sausage beans black pudding mushrooms fried bread ,fried/grilled tomato ,toast on the side.
Nb anyone over the age of 7 should never use red sauce on a FEB

Hash browns are very popular in the ty household especially with the kids. 220 degrees for18 minutes in the oven. Added to smoked bacon is their current choice.

Baked beans have no place on a breakfast plate, neither do potatoes although I'd forgive an Irish or Scottish fried potato scone if we want to be British as opposed to English.

Off to Cote Brasserie later for a full French breakfast. Well, that's what they call it.

I like hash browns with baked beans on top as part of a big breakfast if I'm eating breakfast out. Fried bread is better but there's nothing to stop you having beans on your has browns, egg on your fried bread (along with the black pud, bacon etc).

Well I like them, probably because my Dad was from West Virginia so am half yank anyway, plus the fact a lot of places in Ireland serve them and also a place up the road from me here in the South East do small centimetre square potatoes deep fried and have a slight taste of garlic they are lovely, I would still say if I had the choice my favourite would be fried bread yummy.

Beans on a breakfast plate are only acceptable if it's after ten but before mid day so it's more like brunch so you are not corrupting the purity of a true fry up. Hash browns are not a breakfast product and should only be eaten in an emergency such as destroying evidence after you have partaken in a ram raid on Iceland if your giro is late and you need sustenance .

Hash browns. Potato cakes. Sausages. Bacon. Poached eggs. Soda farls. Wholemeal toast. Black pudding. White pudding. A kipper. Beans. Tomatoes. Mushrooms. A wad of butter. Red sauce. Brown sauce. Salt. Pepper. A double espresso. A big pot of tea. A pint of orange juice. Done.

I was put off hash browns after watching Jamie Oliver in America - where he gained access to a school canteen. The kids started school early each day and were served pizza and "hash browns" for breakfast. The hash browns didn't include any potato - other than the extracted starch "gloop" as a sort of patty with added fats, salt and preservatives. The real killer - literally - was when he reviewed the school yearbooks of alumni to see how many had died young of diet-related conditions. Of course, not all hash browns are as bad as that - even McDs includes real potatoes - but I've not been able to eat them since.

And hash browns - nope, not for me.

Absolute abomination. Bacon, sausage, fried eggs, mushrooms, plum tomatoes, black pudding, potato farls, fried bread, white toast and tea. No beans, no 'grilled' tomatoes, no scrambled eggs and definitely no hash browns. Tomato ketchup allowed but not essential (and yes I am well over 7).

right, sod it...going to get a recipe and make some this week....wont be for breakfast though...will be with an evening meal and will include beans I think...perhaps home made baked beans....ideally I would include bacon but tend to avoid bacon and sausage these days so may be vegetarian sausages.

I am fully in agreement with the majority that hash browns have no place on a breakfast plate. I do however approve of the potato cake. But, no beans? There has to be beans, what else provides the sauce/wet element of the breakfast? No hash browns, but beans all the way.

Roaming Roosters is excellent. Well worth a visit. The sausages are great.

A single egg yolk can't bring the whole dish together. Beans can.
