Politicians have a limited effect on repairing hurricane damage. Trump went to Houston so that he could get a few good photo ops, and say something like "We're behind you 100% with our thoughts and prayers," while the real work is being done by FEMA and the Red Cross.

Herbert was the first hurricane to hit the USA in 12 years. They aren't that common.

Hurricane or not I know quite a few people who go to the Caribbean/USA in our Autumn and wonder why it is wet

Had a few violent storms in Belize in 1986 but fortunately not Hurricane strength.
Re: Hurricane Irma
It's heading straight towards St Martin and will hit it tomorrow evening
Re: Hurricane Irma
Exactly, it's all image. But look how Teresa May was pilloried because she didn't go down to Grenfell Tower after the fire for a few photo ops. Corbyn went down, said all sorts of nice things about what he could do if only he was in power, and got the good press.ontario claret wrote:Politicians have a limited effect on repairing hurricane damage. Re: Hurricane Irma
The problem Trump had was that he went and stayed out fo the way, which is good. But then he lied about his visit and said he met with victims and as always with that guy it's his lies that gets him into trouble. Lying is a compulsion for him.ontario claret wrote:Politicians have a limited effect on repairing hurricane damage. Interesting footage of a plane going inside it, on the BBC website. Brave pilot and three cheers for those that can engineer such a vehicle.

Just wish it would shrink to a couple of miles avoid most places where there are folk, give plenty of time for safe evacuation and hit Mar-a-Logo trashing it; then we will see what Trump decides about climate change.

You have caught me out in a detail, so you can once again feel fully justified that you have retained your crown as nitpicker of the year. I still reckon that hurricanes are rare enough that you don't need to change holiday plans because of it, but obviously that word "major" makes all the difference.Imploding Turtle wrote:Very first ******* sentence proves me right and you wrong.

Why on EARTH are you coming on message boards to complain and complain about other peoples' conversations? And from that, you've gone off on one because I should have used the word "major" a second time because lesser hurricanes have hit the USA. Well, I have already apologised for that, and once again I will apologise, because I cannot imagine the distress this minor slip has caused you.
And then you've gone off on another one because you think I've was on about climate change. What are you on? If I say that 13 hurricanes have hit the Dominican Republic in a hundred years, you think I'm on about climate change? If I say hurricanes are rare in the USA, you think I'm on about climate change? What happens if someone comes up to you in the street and says it looks like rain, do you assume they're going on about climate change? You're obsessed with climate change. If I talk about climate change, you'll be able to tell without ridiculous guesswork.
Re: Hurricane Irma
This board is becoming ridiculous, it seems to be a stage for every keyboard warrior to vent whatever they want. I have met CT on numerous occasions and he comes across as a very educated level headed bloke with a massive passion for our team so how this b0ll0cks is allowed to carry on with the ammounf of mods we have is beyond me. I'm all for free speach but I'm sure there are other places this can be expressed on rather than a football forum. At times it seems this is the place for certain individuals entertainment, and if there is nothing to their liking, they create it. Can we have the forum back to what it should be please?

Good question, could the blast disrupt the storm enough to dissipate it or would it just make the storm radioactive and even more deadly.
As this is a storm related thread, we have also seen two rather large (X rated) solar flares today one being an x9.3 the largest since 2006.

I don't care about the part of your posts that said major hurricanes are rare in the dominican. That's not what i corrected. I've got to admit, I don't know which side of the climate change debate Huffington Post is on.
:shruggs:
It's published in PNAS so you can be confident the methodology is sound, and a quick Googling of it doesn't yield any red flags so the research is sure to be good. Plus it's Kerry Emanuel, his theory of hurricane intensity is still used today, 30 years later.
But it won't have been proven because science doesn't prove things, and it probably hasn't been disproven since it's a forecast of tropical cyclone numbers for the next 8 decades and it's only been 4 years since the research was published. It's not an area of climate science that's well understood relative to pretty much every other area. Forecasting them is itself a forecast based on forecasts. The uncertainties of any hurricane prediction modeling are multiplied by the uncertainties in atmospheric warming & the increase in surface sea temperatures.
Edit: many drunk typos fixed.

Re: Hurricane Irma
Its gutting to see what its done to Barbuda. I visited the island about 15 years ago, its probably the most beautiful place I've ever been to. The guide took us to his house where his wife cooked us a meal - we all sat around the table with his family, his kids were the most polite and well mannered kids I'd met. Everybody lived in wooden houses / everybody was very friendly / they loved the British (not sure if its still owned by Britain) / zero crime. They wouldn't accept a tip when we left and I promised to send the kids an England shirt (which I unfortunately never got round to doing). I hope they are OK.
