The flare thing actually raises many questions, not so much about football hooliganism but about the safety of people within large public gatherings. We unfortunately live in troubled times and supposed heightened security due to terrorism and yet someone was allowed to get into a football ground with what was basically a gun. Maybe in that part of the world they don't feel as threatened as we do but you would imagine that world football as a whole would be on the look out. Football matches you would imagine would be a prime target for extremists so why was this allowed to happen? Very odd.

Agree, it really wouldn't surprise me if the whole thing gets cancelled after a few days - that's how bad I think it will be

A bloke who lived round the corner from me at the time (who I didnt know) was killed by a (marine) flare at a match I went to : Wales v Romania in 1993.
Even ordinary flares pose fire/burns risks. I really dont get people who think they are "atmosphere -enhancing". In a crowded place they are downright dangerous.
As per previous post, it also strongly indicates that security/searches are nowhere near good enough.

We were in Cologne a few years ago on a City break. Arrived Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. We were puzzled that all the shops and places of interest were being boarded up. Apparently they like festivals along the Rhine and this was a major event. To say it get's wild is an understatement. They were drinking in the streets in their thousands and just dropping the glasses on the floor. We spend the next few days walking around with broken glass everywhere. It was certainly a spectacular event and we were privileged to observe. They certainly know how to party as the West End might find out later tonight.

It's always been fairly volatile in Germany. I have been to Hamburg and Bayern in the 80's and the clubs used to distribute leaflets asking fans not to cause trouble. It did increase dramatically after reunification when the east Germans got involved. They were at least 30 years behind western values and have yet to catch up.

I agree with you point regarding far right factions, that was supressed to a degree but many more groups seem to be getting lairy siince Stasi Merkel became the new Dictator!

Us thicky leave voters were spreading drivel about the Germans wanting a federal Europe.
whereas in reality they are a Peaceful loving race, as are the French peacefully protesting yesterday.
What is in a way bizarre but under further scrutiny makes total sense is that the far right and far left are absolutely identical in there actions regardless of their rhetoric.

Apparently Arsenal have warned the Germans that they will be ejected if they have seats in the home areas of the ground - think they may have to accept the Koln are at home tonight - can't see too many stewards trying to throw a large amount of these guys out of the ground - that could get real ugly real fast

There was an all German European Final at Wembley c 5 years ago (Munchen v Dortmund?). There were a huge number of Germans over for that with not too much trouble (except odd punch-ups between themselves). Hopefully it will go fairly smoothly tonight but it's not good to have so many away fans without tickets around the game.

We happened on the carnival/festival in Düsseldorf on a stag do... from 8 in the morning it was party time. All the trees that lined streets had speakers playing music.

We were the only people in town not in fancy dress

This isn't Lancs Police. The Met deal with 4,500+ public events every year, from football games to large scale demo's.

The sensible thing to do here, depending on Arsenal ticket sales, is to enlarge the away section, and move any Koln fans that do get in without tickets to that area.

The Police will be sensible enough not to try and eject them, as this is plain ******* stupid.

I suspected, something could be going on when I was told they had 3,000 match tickets but 20,000 had travel tickets.
