I don't think there's a single American band mentioned, not sure why.CoolClaret wrote:How has Nirvana not been mentioned?!

Add to the list:
REM (admittedly they were better in the 80's)
Mercury Rev
Black Crowes
Flaming Lips
Dinosaur Jr
Smashing Pumpkins
Pixies

By looking at a lot of the suggestions it seems to stem around the whole Brit-pop culture of the latter part of the 90s
Personally preferred the grunge of the early 90s

'Shed Seven? Funniest thing I've ever read on here!'
'You really shouldn't smirk and sneer at someone else's musical tastes and preferences - how come you haven't grasped that listening to music, enjoying music is very much a personal thing?

It comes down to individual preferences, and we're all different.
What makes you think your musical inclinations are 'better' than someone else's?

I wasn't really into Radiohead, Pulp, The Manics, The Charlatans, James or The Verve but I'm on board with the rest of them. I'd take Spacemen 3 over Spiritualized though.TheFamilyCat wrote:Super Furry Animals

I get the feeling this thread is only intended for guitar bands but I'm going to throw Underworld and Orbital in there.
Other bands I'd add into the mix:
My Bloody Valentine as Loveless was released in 91.
Mogwai and the whole post rock scene started in the 90's, astonishing live band even if they have yet to produce a perfect album.
The Pixies
Low
The Beta Band
Dinosaur Jr
Kyuss then Queens of The Stone Age
Pavement
Shellac
Sonic Youth
Stereolab
I don't include Oasis in the same breath as any of the above. Beatles cover band at best.
Re: Bands that were better than Oasis in the 90's
I never got the love for Shed Seven, for me they were real Vauxhall Conference level of indie.
Oasis' first album is still one of my favourites, and I play it often. I love it.
The thing is, I don't really care for anything after that, including What's The Story.
Up there as great 90s albums with Definitely Maybe I still listen to regularly are:
Manics - Holy Bible and Everything Must Go
Gomez - Bring It On
Slowdive - Souvlaki
Ride - Nowhere
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Verve - A Storm in Heaven
Pulp - Different Class
Portishead - Dummy and Portishead
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
And then there's a whole host of American rock stuff.
All in all, I don't think Oasis were the best band of the nineties, but I won't argue about anyone else thinking that.

Re: Bands that were better than Oasis in the 90's
I loved the Beta Band, although would personally class them as 00's rather than 90's, otherwise they'd be on my list. Mogwai passed me by to be honest but I do like their new album and maybe need to dip into their back catalogue.claretabroad wrote:I wasn't really into Radiohead, Pulp, The Manics, The Charlatans, James or The Verve but I'm on board with the rest of them. Gomez are another band I like a lot - they never had the commercial success that was expected after winning the Mercury Prize but they made some good records.

Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses for me.... haven't stopped playing them i my car since the early 90's. My kids refer to it as 'music from the olden days'..

Re: Bands that were better than Oasis in the 90's
They won't be most people's cup of tea (or genre) but if you're asking for better bands than Oasis n the 90's:
White Zombie
Suicidal Tendencies
Guns n Roses
Pearl Jam
to name a few. Noel Gallagher is a prick but he has some decent musical ability; however technically the band isn't even in the same league as these or many others for that matter. Even Blur were better!

Re: Bands that were better than Oasis in the 90's
I went to quite a few Oasis concerts in the 90s back when you could get tickets from Solid sounds and bought everything they brought out.
Even being at Knebworth and looking round at a sea of people I never realised just how big Oasis were. The amount of todays youngsters that are massive Oasis fans speaks volumes.
If they re-formed tomorrow and put 3 shows on at Knebworth (125k) they would sell out in minutes. These type of bands don't come around very often.

I prefer Ocean Colour Scene but liked most of the 90s bands. Got a few gigs to go to before Christmas. Happy Monday’s, From the Jam and Shed Seven plus Cast. Can’t wait!

Re: Bands that were better than Oasis in the 90's
As someone said it's all very subjective. I liked Oasis and had a number of their albums but for me they weren't even in my top 50 (I have a wide scope and a lifelong love of music that even exceeds football). Specific bands of the period and sticking to 'guitar' bands who released singles as well as albums I would have to say REM (by a mile at the time) and Kula Shaker (too short lived). Also given that there was supposedly a big rivalry (despite not being even remotely alike) I liked Blur far more than Oasis, more talented and varied by far.

The Doves of course that is my personal choice, a lot of the bands mentioned previously were very good in their hay days, including Oasis, but I think we all have our own favourites.

Re: Bands that were better than Oasis in the 90's
Never thought I'd say this but Liam seems the more likeable one in interviews now. Noel knows how to press a TV audiences buttons and can play to it. Liam on the otherhand just has a humble shrug towards showbiz, which is quite refreshing.
As for the 90's. I was in a club in 1990 and the DJ was playing Some Friendly- Charlatans and Stone Roses. After all the 80's dross we'd had to endure it sounded great.

I liked really early Boo Radley's but then they faded away for me.

Although putting up with Albarn's Mockney posing and artistic angst is very hard work, "13" is a pretty decent album (IMHO).

In the 90's I attended a concert where my son was performing at his infant school, the instruments were out of tune, the tempo varied between each of the performers and I think they weren't all playing the same thing.
But it was an improvement on Oasis.
IMHO of course... Each to their own.
