Yes they’d released him. He was a free transfer when a free transfer was exactly that, a young player probably with no future. And his dad contacted Harry Potts and asked if he could have a trial. The rest is history.

She used to shorten it somewhat to...
D O B DOBBO!

She is 37 now!

Having never seen Dobbo play, but knowing how much of a legend he is, which non burnley player is he like?
With the greatest respect to Jack Cork, Dobbo must be a class above, so who in modern memory fits the bill, players that the under 30's may have seen. Thinking of the great premier league midfielders like Xabi Alonso, Vieira, Scholes, Makelele, Ray Parlour, Lampard etc....which best describes?

You obviously missed the DiBranchio years.

He could be fun to watch as a sweeper.

If you're on about Cork, just stop it right there.

It isn't going to happen, don't feel the need to bang that drum all season like you did with Tarks and Edgar when you wanted them moving.
Just go sit in the corner and shush.

Westwood for sweeper Sidney.
Dobson was what you might call a cultured defender who sometimes forgot just what was and was not possible in one's own penalty area but he always was a great watch alongside Phelan and Overson.

Westwood?
Why would you want to play him as a sweeper?

You've never seen him ever play in defence, or as a sweeper, he's a midfielder and that's it.
You're just getting desperate in wanting someone moved again and it's hilarious.

Probably Scholes but twice the player.

I've never seen anybody better at Burnley on or off the field.

Cork is without doubt a great player. With time I think he could possibly manage to get close to Dobsons level of greatness.

I am trying to think here duncandisorderly. Maybe the Yaya Toure from a couple of years back?

Unruffled smooth elegance, think the Tom Graveney of football, like Graveney lacked that killer touch which would have taken him to the next level, a sort of Zidane of British football

The best player England never had (well hardly ever). He would have been a regular for England had it not been for Trevor Brooking - very similar players but Brooking had the advantage of playing for West Ham who for some reason in the 60's and early 70's seemed to provide half the England side (well it seemed like it) despite not being a particularly good side.
What exactly was it with England and West Ham back then?
