Can anything beat Beethovens fifth
for pure ragged emotion, only Tchaikovsky can come near to equalling that angry sometimes despairing power, that raw emotion of man crying out to a heartless universe.

Mozart's Symphony No.40 in G minor pisses em all off.
Give it a blast and be awestruck.

Not necessarily better than LVB's 5th, but an inspiration for Lover's Concerto.

Mahler's Eight Symphony also known as the Symphony of a Thousand
takes some beating.
A full orchestra+, two choirs and four soloists on a journey to glorious death!
Really haven't heard much that comes close.

Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
Indirectly contributed to the invention of modern dance music, heavy metal, prog rock and jazz all at once.
Although Beethovens 5th is pure heavy metal, for the time.

Re: Can anything beat Beethovens fifth
I used to love Ravel's Bolero asa kid. I loved the way it began with one instrument and each time I would try and work out which instrument was being added. Then Torvill & Dean just came along and ruined it all.
Same with Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Nigel Kennedy.
They didn't need to bring it to the masses; I already had it.

There's film of him actually composing the music showing the difficulties he had:

It seems the 4th movement of the 2nd was not so much troubling as inspired by his troubles:

Re: Can anything beat Beethovens fifth
There are few occasions when one is taken aback by the originality, sheer vitality and completeness of a musical work, partly I guess because it's hard to put oneself in the place of the first people who heard it and to understand the shock of the new.
At the pop level I guess Sgt Pepper had that effect, I'd never liked the Beatles but here was a new sound opening new doors a type of musical revelation, they never did it again but I guess once in a lifetime ain't bad.
The ability to shock and awe in a commanding and complete manner doesn't often happen,
Shostakovitch's 1st Prokofiev's Scythian Suite, Stravinsky's Right of Spring all manage that but never touch the emotions in the way that Beethoven or Tchaikovsky could. They are cerebral pieces beautifully constructed musically riveting but lacking that essential ingredient which makes us who we are, raw untrammelled emotion, they leave me tense churned up agitated but ultimately dissatisfied in a way that Beethoven does not.

Beethovens Christmas Adventure is probably the strongest of the films.
Sarabande - Handel. D minor is a particularly emotive key

Re: Can anything beat Beethovens fifth
What makes Bolero so intriguing is that it's written in a minor key. Also, the unexpected changes in tempo.

Ade Akinbiyi's celebration after scoring at Chelsea.
Otherwise, if you want despair and thrash metal isn't your thing, try anything by Purcell or maybe Mozart's Requiem

Apart from the fact that it's in C major and the tempo remains constant throughout, that's a pretty accurate post Ontario claret!ontario claret wrote:What makes Bolero so intriguing is that it's written in a minor key. Also, the unexpected changes in tempo.

Re: Can anything beat Beethovens fifth
Don't know about the C major part. Sounds like a minor key to me. And it's definitely partly dependent on the dips and dives in the tempo as it tells it's story.

Definitely in C major and as far as I'm aware it doesn't speed up or slow down.ontario claret wrote:Don't know about the C major part. Sounds like a minor key to me. And it's definitely partly dependent on the dips and dives in the tempo as it tells it's story.

Re: Can anything beat Beethovens fifth
Spot on, and you're right about the tempo as well. The main feature of this piece is that it is based entirely on a repeated ostinato pattern that is unchanged throughout.BFCmaj wrote:Definitely in C major and as far as I'm aware it doesn't speed up or slow down.
tbh - I don't find it very inspiring at all.
Doesn't come within a million miles of any of the Beethoven symphonies.
It's good to read that some posters are aware of the Mahler Symphonies. (The epic No. 2 would probably be my choice)
For an overwhelming spiritual and musical experience however, (as an unapologetic Wagnerian), I would probably have to give my vote to Bruckner No. 7.
Re: Can anything beat Beethovens fifth
Don't know if this is true or not but when Beethoven died he was buried within 24 hours and there was concern by some as to whether he was dead or not so they opened his crypt and Beethoven was sat up rubbing every note of all the music he had ever written when asked what he was doing Ludwig said " isn't it obvious I'm decomposing"

Is there a "groan" button on this keyboard? At least he wasn't buried in a pauper's grave, unlike Mozart.
