Tottenham 1 Burnley 4 - 35 years ago

Post by ClaretTony » Fri Jan 19, 2018 6:26 pm

19th January 1983 - Sensational night at White Hart Lane, and we'd even sacked the manager Brian Miller that morning on his 46th birthday. Ridiculous season when we couldn't buy a win in the league but kept knocking teams above us out of the cup competitions.

Sort of summed up the season really - Billy scored as many goals that night as he did in two complete seasons away from home in the league.

Did Graham Roberts ever recover from the mauling he got that night? It was only four days earlier at Burnden Park where we turned in an horrendous display against Bolton including a goal for their goalkeeper, Jim McDonagh.

How bad were we at Bolton? Awful performance and McDonagh had nearly scored twice before that.

I remember going to the tv room at halls of residence and it being full of spurs fans. We were really poor that season and I sat thinking I hope it isn’t too embarrassing a score as they were all giving it large before kick off.

As the goals kept going in I really couldn’t believe it and it was only when the fourth went in that I thought we would win.

I was there that night..what a belter...I went with three mates, none of them Burnley fans.

Spurs yobs came round to the Burnley exits at the end, to dish out punishment.

One of my mates got thumped..fair enough he was an Arsenal fan.. :D

A game that has stuck in my memory, don't have many nights like that.

For reasons I can't remember I watched this game from "The Shelf" surrounded by Spurs fans and was therefore unable to celebrate openly as the miracle-in-yellow occurred before my eyes. I think I suffered some form of internal haemorrhage maintaining outward calm, particularly when Billy Hamilton raced clear and smashed in that 4th goal.Fittingly I remember celebrating after the match in the pub called The Tottenham which used to be near Tottenham Court Road tube station.

CT, I remember travelling to the game on the Tube and there in the "Stop Press" of the London Evening Standard was the news that Burnley had sacked Brian Miller on the eve of the game. The "Stop Press" feature disappeared from the paper several decades ago.

I was looking at the match day programme only last week. What made this game memorable for me was the fact that we went on to play Liverpool in the next round and lost 3-0 in the first leg at Anfield as I recall despite creating numerous chances (one on one's with their goalkeeper as I remember that were squandered). A local independent bookie priced up Burnley at 10/1 to win the second leg and I availed myself of those odds placing £100 to win. A 1-0 win on the night and enough for a holiday.

I missed that game because I was so annoyed at Miller's sacking.

A very frustrating season with many talented players.

Too young to travel to London for a night match but listened to commentary on Radio Lancs. Quite rare at the time for them to have live commentary on a match.

Was allowed to stay up and watch the highlights on ITV only to find they showed Man United instead.

In a parallel world whilst StAlbansClaret (who we were nominally with) was trying to stay stum on The Shelf me and another mate (at the time a York City fan) were in the away end with the Burnley throng. He had a casual type Polo shirt on which was enough for a Burnley fan to decide he was a Tottenham fan in the away end. Fortunately, the bloke involved was someone who had been at Nelson and Colne College when I was there, and I shouted 'He's with me!!' before the gathering mob buried him.

And then there was the real action, most of which was at the 'wrong' end.

Was working in London at that time and was fortunate enough to be invited into an Executive Box. Spurs supporters in the next box sent us `a piece of cake`We threw them towels at the end to dry their tears. A memorable night at the Lane. Also saw us score 4 in the 4-4 draw there.

I remember that night vividly.
I was in the middle of a German forest sat in my radio wagon listening to the commentary on BFBS Radio.
Well the first half anyway.
Lost what was a very poor crackly reception about 5 mins into the 2nd half.
Only found out the final score in the morning.

Great memories, remember skiving off school and getting the Viscount Central from Nelson.
Seemed to remember Jimmy Holland knocking himself out on the away dug-out just after half time?
Great to see 40+ coaches parked outside White Hart Lane that night even if most of the time getting on and off involved getting randomly attacked by tooled up locals..

Saw both games. Talk about going from the pits to a fantastic performance. Gibson scored first and we feared the worst. Step up to the mark Billy Hamilton. Bit scary after the game but no real problems.

One diving header and one volley two of the best ogs scored by Roberts.Billy Hamilton ran Spurs ragged.
Glenda Hoddle was screaming at his colleagues for not working hard enough.I took a load of kids from Oxford all wearing borrowed WHU scarves a great night.

Took my boss at the time, a big Spurs fan. And four other friends.
As we approached our gate, we heard the crowd. He thought they were Spurs fans! :)
He wasn't too pleased we were in the Burnley end. Top level, behind the goal.
He was less pleased with the result. We'd a fantastic turn out, that night. And what a result.

White Heart Lane was always a ground I liked going to.
Wonder what the new one will be like?

Was an incredible night.. after an awful journey reflecting on Brian Millard sacking ..was delirious after the game until got outside the ground and wondered if I'd get home alive ..the menace in the air was awful..think two people were stabbed trying to get to the coaches which were parked next to Broadwater Farm ..gangs brandishing weapons all over the place ..came as no surprise when heard PC Keith Blackelock murdered their a couple of years later

Remember this night like it was yesterday. Went down on the coach from the gas workers, went to every match with them at the time, had a pint in the club before we set off and got outside white hart lane around 3 pm. All went in the corner pin ( I think that’s what it was called; just outside the away end). Was great until around 6 ish when local spurs lads tried to get in and kick off, bit of a rumble pool balls thrown around but soon calmed down. Then we got outside and plod seemed to be a bit angry with us for being in there, got a bit iffy with horses pinning you up against the wall etc. Great game for us could not believe the result, brilliant. Then the walk back to the coaches, someone actually threw a TV set out at us from one of the high rise flats as we walked back, even the coppers were laughing at that. Amazing night, amazing memories. Great times travelling at that time with Henry, dodo, croc et al. Brilliant times.

That was a great night, fantastic atmosphere! Me and my brother drove down and parked down some backstreet about 10 mins away from the ground. when we came out the police were directing all the Burnley fans towards the coaches, we had to break through the line to go in the opposite direction. we were chased by what seemed to be 100 spurs fans we jumped over a garden fence then went garden hopping landing in gold fish ponds and veggie patches, a woman was out in one of the gardens we jumped into, she took us in to her house and made tea for us we stayed until the crowds dissapeared. Nice lady!

I was on a works course in London at Manor Gardens, Holloway Road tube nearest. Went to the match. Unbelievable to smash Ossies Tottingham Hotspurs!

Walked back to Seven Sisters and every yard was packed with chuntering spurs fans. Tube was jammed and my scarves hidden. They were still going on about how we had walloped their superstars. Memorable for all time.

Frightening how time flies. One of our great performances following on from the worst away performance by a Burnley side that I can remember at Bolton.

Your right Tony, it did seem a long way to the coaches. Could have been a dodgy walk as well if we was’nt surrounded by the police. It’s fair to say the locals were not to happy that night :D :D

Great memories, hard to believe it was so long ago.

Went down from the Royal Oak in Stacksteads, a pub were the Bacup clarets used to hang out in the 80s.

Bacup clarets took 2 coaches down that day. 1st stop was Poysers off licence Waterfoot. 2nd stop pilsworth m66 to empty the dust bin which by this time was full to the rim with ****. 3rd stop Watford gap were the Bacup lads had a set to with the then notorious Accie Road crew.

I went to Bolton the previous Saturday and expected a right drubbing, but the lads pulled off a result that will live in my memory to my dieing day

I'd been to Burnden just days earlier and after what I saw there no way was I going all the way to London to see just how many Spurs could put past us. I listened on the radio and when Gibson put them in front I actually turned it off as I knew the floodgates would open. I put it back on only after the final whistle would have blown and suddenly thought I'd fallen asleep and was dreaming! Simply bizarre!

Booked late, had to pay a bit more for the coach (Everton team coach) and we were sat in the opposite end to the main group of Burnley fans but had great views of the goals. Near neighbour stabbed outside the ground whilst with his son walking back to the coach. KSC 110 Club showed a bootleg video (without commentary) of the match a couple of weeks later.

I was listening on the radio in a kitchen in Darlington. Every time we scored I went mental, running into the front room to tell the future Mrs.
She should have realised then.......

I remember reading the result on my daily commute into downtown Toronto. I kept on reading the single scoreline over and over. I couldn't believe it.
