Spiral wrote:Your argument is nonsense because it assumes that 1. there is an independent arbiter determining the boundaries of objectification and tastelessness (and that these decisions are being made corrosively), and 2. female SSN are employed for their looks, not their newscasting ability; but there's an even more sinister implication in what you say, in that by arguing female SSN presenters are employed as eye-candy your position assumes sports newscasting is the preserve of men.
It isn’t nonsense the fact is that jobs are given based on a persons looks, Hollister being one company. As for SSN can you honestly say that the looks of the female presenters didn’t come into the equation when they were employed.

I'm not saying they weren't, I'm saying it's nonsense to suggest looks takes precedence over newscasting ability. I'm saying it's nonsense to suggest they are only employed as eye-candy and that it's quite unpleasant to follow such a train of thought to its logical conclusion-that only men can report sports news with any degree of competence.

I actually agree with you, here, they obviously have talent at presenting, but sadly it was their looks that got them their break which is not the same standards applied to their male colleagues

Well you've practically already parodied Al Murray on this thread. Poe's law in action, I suppose.

You've also failed that one. I'd give up while you're only 20 miles behind ;-)

Advice: If you're going to attack people who like sport, don't do it on a sporty messageboard. Because you're not making much sense.

There's nothing wrong with a news broadcaster employing a pleasant looking newsreader, but newscasting and...er...whatever walking at the arm of a darts player is called, are two completely separate industries, with one clearly requiring a degree of competence beyond mere aesthetics. As far as this thread is concerned, it's the false equivalence of all false equivalences.

Why? I'm not in in the business of embargoing words. I can think of about fifteen times on this thread alone where "c.unt" might be used appropriately. The bloke next to me in the CFS has tits as big as anything I've ever seen outside of porn.

Staying with that thought, at least pornography is honest in its intentions.

It's almost like comparing banning walk on girls at darts to disney not requiring full blown adult entertainment.

If its a) then I don't see how you can argue with Spiral.
Comercially darts has been sexed up to encourage people to watch it. lets take it's most avid supporters who pay the most money to view either live events or sky subscriptions. Do we think these stag parties and ladettes really give a toss about the poor trafficked and forced to preform walk on girls. Why would sponsors pull away if the fans of the sport are happy.

Comercially long term I think the decision doesn't go hand in hand with where darts has managed to get itself. Darts punches above it's weight in terms of viewers and sponsorship and I honestly think the decision will be reversed at some point. It is more jumping on the old ban wagon that really isn't needed. I'd like a sponsor to now pull out of darts as it disagrees with the lunatic decision to stop the walk on ladies.

Looking at the picture above it is not like the girls are in swimwear is it. And the butch one in the middle looks like a real feminist.

I hope all these pretty looking ladies have got a few other qualifications and skills in hand.

If not the job centres might see a change in their normal clientele in the next couple of years !!

In all seriousness the grid girls that surrounded not just F1 but pretty much most biking and motor events always felt very 1970s Miss World beauty contest.

It was something that was never necessary and like a lot of motor sport seemed to be on show to demonstrate how much money the sponsors were willing to throw at it....all pretty vulgar in a Lewis Hamilton private jet type of way.

What might be interesting is what the US do about cheerleading - in that countries eyes it`s an industry / career. At the same time it does glorify women and other than that great scene in Dodgeball I can`t recall seeing too many overweight or "not - good looking" women (can I still say this ?!!)

The US see Cheerleading as a sport in it's own right, there are regional and national championships, teams are mixed sex and there is a high degree of physical and athletic skills at professional level

Yep- lets stop these young (pretty) women doing what they wish to do to have some fun/earn a crust. Their brains aren't capable of deciding for themselves.
Get them back into the sanctity of the kitchen where thing are simpler and maybe get them to wear garb that covers them up completely barring an eye slit (so they dont burn themselves). Oh, and dont let them talk to anybody outside the family, they may be tempted into doing something non-PC.

Women have to be liberated from themselves/their crazy desire to decide for themselves. Right on.

Ok so if a country declared lap dancing or male stripping as a sport and had regional competitions etc would that make it ok ?.....a few of them are very athletic apparently !

I`m not saying I agree but its going to be interesting how far all of this goes

Of course these girls have no choice in whether they wish to do this. In fact we should ban men looking at women at all and put CCTV up in all establishments to check if anyone is looking. After all people can put in a profile match for dating and go out staring at their phone screen all night now

There are world pole dancing championships, context is king here I think. In both competition cheerleading and pole dancing athletic ability and artistic merit are the objectives, just like Olympic gymnastics. Also the performers are the main focus of the event.

None of those things can be said for darts or F1 'girls'.

Will the girls still need to be pretty when reading the news off an auto cue for SSN?

Not sure I would compare pole dancing to an olympic gymnast but hey ho.

Miss World used to be a world wide competition which had artistic merits (the organisers would argue I`m sure). Most beauty pagaents are not seen as PC now unless of course its in the deep south of America where pretty much anything goes in terms of sexism, racism and anything else ending in "ism" !

Probably right. What ever the discipline though there is far more legitimacy in training to be the best in the world at something than walking next to them based on nothing but your physical appearance.

Aren't the girls appearing on SSN selected mainly for their looks and appearance?

Or is it just down to their in-depth knowledge of sport?

I don't know, I wasn't part of the selection process. I know their primary role is to present the news, not to silently walk next to someone who does.

Don`t disagree with you.

The grid girls and dart girls are purely eye candy and completely irrelevant to the sport - they are there for the gratification of the audience and whilst that might be fun for the audience (and the girls) it does not make it right.

Cheerleading, pole dancing and even beauty pageants are more legitimate than these - not sure "far" more but I understand what you mean in that they are people who train and are not a sideshow to the main sporting event.

Just think that the whole debate has a long way to go yet and who knows what the main people, pressure groups etc who will drive forward the campaigns will think is acceptable in the future.

Is there any difference between a girl promoting clothes, perfume, cars etc and the ones promoting sport.
In many industries girls are employed as promotion girls.
The girls have a right to decide if they want to be a “grid girl” it is up to the industry to decide whether they add commercial value and they should not be made unemployed and the country lose their tax revenues and have to sign on just because a few people on Twitter demand it.

1) I doubt whether Sandy, Mercedes and Delores are in a Union

2) Steelworkers are there to work with steel....you don`t get Big Trevor and Little Arthur stood on the door at the factory dressed in leather thongs welcoming in all the steelworkers with a big naughty grin.

Sandy, Mercedes etc should be able to get other jobs in the service industry which don`t involve them walking about for dirty old blokes to ogle at them for a few hours. Just like Big Trevor and Little Arthur did !!
