Blatherwick went on to have a decent career at the level we were at.Westyd wrote:Wasn't Steve Blatherwick around at about that time and he was pretty awful !!
As for Howey, not good at all, but certainly not our worst player even at that time.

You can add Mark Ford and the defender Michael Williams to that batch brought in by (T)Waddle.

Wasn't he one of the players Stan effectively sacked live on the radio along with Blatherwick, Ford and Michael Williams?

Didn't Stan say that one of those who broke the curfew started crying and begging for another chance?
You can imagine Stan's reaction to that.

He was a trier winstanley he just had a habit of making mistakes and the other team normally scored, he was probably very unlucky.gawthorpe_view wrote:Winstanley?, yes, but I think Stan said he wasn't up to the job at that level, no lack of effort implied, but he would never win the crowd over, or something similar.

Re: I got p***** and signed for Burnley
It was Michael Williams that Stan was referring to with that quote....Shore claret wrote:That was in his book but it didn't say which player.
EDIT: I've replied to the wrong quote, Michael Williams was the one Stan referred to as " Not lacking application, a trier, but he'll never win the crowd over "... As for the player pleading after a " Nightclub incident ", I've no idea who that was ... Apologies..

“‘Lee. We’ve just accepted an offer from Burnley for you. Let me tell you, we don’t want you to go. But I know you’ve been a bit frustrated lately, so it’s entirely up to you.’
Yeah, that REALLY is what bosses say when they don't want someone to leave.

Think it was rumour about Howey been waddles brother in law. Recall a post match by waddle when he slated the fans over the criticism towards Howey. Think he might have played as a forward in that game. He was poor.

Re: I got p***** and signed for Burnley
He seems a really decent bloke Mark Winstanley, he delivered trusses for my job last week, the hiab on his wagon was broken so we had a good half hour with him having a giggle and chatting whilst awaiting a friendly farmer to give us a lift off with his loadall. Very nice 'lad' (he's just turned 50).Terrier wrote:I quite liked winstanley and to me was far better than the others stan moved on.

I didn’t mind Winstanley. A bit error prone at times, but some games I remember thinking he’d played fantastic. Different level of football to now mind. I remember him hitting the crossbar at Bury away with a thunderbolt of a shot. Well, that’s how I recall it.

Correct, but we had many defenders who were worse than Winstanley in our 4th division days.Lancasterclaret wrote:Jamie Hoyland was a far better player than Mark Winstanley

Joe Gallagher - not his fault - playing on one leg being an obvious one, and then there were players like Morgan, Heggarty, Heesom, Palmer .... I could name another dozen.
Before he is labelled "worst ever" it should be remembered that he was playing in a higher division. (191 appearances for a good Bolton side before he moved to us and clocked up another 150.)

Re: I got p***** and signed for Burnley
I didn't mind Winstanley at all. I certainly remember being very pleased when he scored a brace at The New Den in our 94/95 1st Division Campaign, helping give us a rare away win in that ultimately unsuccessful season. He seemed to be very unlucky in the fact that nearly all his mistakes seemed to be punished with goals. Even in games we won handsomely, he could drop a rick. When we beat York City 7:2 in Waddle's reign, I believe that they opened the scoring that day when their forward ran onto a clearance that Winstanley had shanked towards his own goal.
In other matters, the Infamous Four who were sacked on live radio by Stan could well have been Five. Stan once told me(at a Q&A - we're not best buddies or owt) that, Had Mark Ford not have broken his leg in the previous Home Game against Bristol Rovers(courtesy of then player-manager Ian Holloway) he'd have joined the other Four on the Naughty Step.
