Granddad vs Grandad
I'm sorry, I know Spades won't be happy, but I'm 38 and grew up spelling it Grandad. Christmas cards, birthday cards, thank you letters for the presents he and my Grandma sent me... it was always Grandad.
Granddad looks ridiculous.
And I've only noticed people spelling it Granddad recently. I'm sure a few years ago, it was always Grandad.
As I love things like this, I decided to do some digging (not literally).. it appears Granddad is American.. Grandad is British english. We copied Halloween from America. We copied the Prom, from America.
Do we have to copy Granddad?

Re: Granddad vs Grandad
What about grand daughter?
Grandaughter?
Granddaughter?
Obviously the latter.
I rest my case
I'd be happy with gran'dad.

Which is the correct spelling: “Granddad” or “Grand-dad” or “Grandad”?

Don’t take it too serious. I just thought at 38 you would probably not be a Grandad yet and maybe not for a while so it seemed a little of lighthearted banter.

I would hazard a guess that a very high percentage of Grandads spell it as Grandad

Re: Granddad vs Grandad
Interesting.
Looking at the trend, granddad has shot up in popularity since the mid to late 90s. With grandad remaining the same.
However, grandad is still quite clearly the most often used spelling in the UK. But granddad is catching up.
I suspect it's because we're basically trying to be American. We're doing what they do. Like I mentioned... halloween - they celebrated it long before us, so we decided to join in. Going to the Prom... they did it, so we now do it.
The Internet kicked off big time in the late 90s - Google started in 1998, just as the trend pointed upwards. Then we had social media with people 'learning' how to spell from mainly the Americans.
It's little surprise why it's surging up in the way we spell words.

Granda for me which sidesteps this issue as 'Grandda' is so obviously wrong.

Re: Granddad vs Grandad
I'm "Granddad Paul" to my granddaughter.
Yes, yes, I know it's not the conventional "English English" spelling - but it follows the same form as "granddaughter" and the same form as "grandmother." Why do we make it so difficult for kids to learn to read (and spell) with confusing/contradictory word forms?
Besides, when she's older and asks why it is "spelt wrong" I can explain that my spelling is special and chosen just for her.

Never met you Paul. But, from your posts on here, your granddaughter has got a very likeable Granddad. Best wishes to her. When my grand children come along ( fingers crossed!) they're going to get spoilt rotten.Paul Waine wrote:I'm "Granddad Paul" to my granddaughter.

For those of us where a dd is pronounced like the "th" in the word "the" then granddad would be granthad so I prefer Grandad although it's "Taid" here anyway even when speaking English.

Just for clarity, Halloween is not American. It was celebrated in Britain over 2000 years ago long before the US had been invented.FactualFrank wrote:Interesting.

Mine calls me gangan but when I do cards etc I sign grandad. As opposed to when they come on holiday as it just costs me a grand.
