Seriously overrated club managers
Seriously overrated club managers
I'll kick off with Chris Coleman.
A fantastic advert for Grecian 2000 and did ok with the Welsh despite being in a group with the weakest England team in my grandaughters hamsters lifetime but come on the pundits were almost fawning over him when he got the Sunderland job ( perhaps Pep and and Jose are correct questioning their credentials to be pundits ? ) and it was all onwards and upwards under the welsh Harry R.
There's loads out there, obviously horse face however its for current managers not those in the back woods.

mark hughes.
played for big clubs but is not a bright man.
just look at some of the footage of him and lineker 'settling in' at barcelona. one man was an intelligent, pragmatic firebrand and the other was a lost, bewildered knuckle-dragger.

Pardew. As he's now ably demonstrating at WBA.
When he got that eight year contract at Newcastle, he must have thought
it was Christmas, his birthday and the Lord Mayor's show all rolled into one.

Hughes did decent jobs at Blackburn, Stoke and City.
3 consecutive top 9 at Stoke, European football at Blackburn.

Not sure currently but previously... Owen Coyle. "The next Bill Shankley" apparently.
It was an exciting time when he was with us, kind of like when you're ugly as sin but a fit bird is going out with you, you can't quite believe it, but later on realise she's a massive nobber.

I wouldn't post anybody who has an American owner. They are the pits, as they like to say.
The Glazers only get away with it because of Manures income and even they managed to screw it up between Fergie and Jose.

Re: Seriously overrated club managers
There are some good selections here - Clement, Zola, Coleman.
I would not include Redknapp, Allardyce or Hughes in that list. All had their ups and downs but plenty of ups.

Re: Seriously overrated club managers
Most managers seem to have a time when things went right and then failed to live up to that standard. Owen Coyle is a classic example.
I get the impression, certainly at the top end, that clubs are not willing to take risks on unknown managers any more. Having said that, who thought the Carvalhal appointment at Swansea was like the Laws one at Burnley? It's early days of course but he is surprising everyone. Look at how many times the word 'sacked' appears in his managerial career:

I reckon Harry Rednapps dog would have more of a clue about managing a team.

Sean Dyche, he's terrible, he wouldn't do a job anywhere else at all. Leave him at Burnley, he's found his limit.

I'd have Redknapp top of the list.
Every manager has a down time, but he collects them like butterflies.
It isn't even that he takes clubs backwards, he takes them to the edge of extinction.

Gareth Southgate, Stuart Pearce, Aidy Boothroyd.
All somehow found themselves in influential well paid roles within the F.A without doing anything particularly significant at club level. The sooner the F.A is forcced to reform the better.

some managers just dont fit at a certain club. doesnt mean they are a dud. even mr dyche would struggle in certain clubs and he is brilliant.Wile E Coyote wrote:paul clement, went from barnstead atheltic to real madrid for some inexplicable reason, a real dud if ever there was one.

Was instrumental last season in binning Rovers.
If that doesn't deserve a special dispensation, I don't know what does.

Re: Seriously overrated club managers
Did OK? Rather uncharitable. Got Wales to their first major tournament since 1958 and led them to the semi-finals, an achievement which England haven't managed in 20 years. He did a superb job and in my opinion has made a really bad decision going to the manager's graveyard at Sunderland. The problems there are entrenched and not down to Coleman's managerial ability (or Grayson's, or Moyes', et. al.)bfcjg wrote:I'll kick off with Chris Coleman.
