ARTICLE: Arthur’s Bungalow

Post by ClaretTony » Thu Feb 22, 2018 11:08 am

Following the reaction to the photo I posted last Saturday, I've just written a few words about Arthur Bellamy. I hope I've done him justice.

A great and fitting tribute Tony. I can almost hear Arthur muttering that he wasn't sure what the fuss was about

A marvellous tribute to a marvellous man. Arthur's service to Burnley is impossible to better.

Marvellous tribute, Tony, made all the better by the personal recollections. For many of us - especially my generation which started supporting Burnley in the 1980s, Arthur was simply a familiar face who appeared at half-time with a pitchfork. It's little gestures like this that remind my why I f****** love BFC.

He often made me smile with his cultured style of play and yes, frown that night at The Hawthorns. Played at the highest level against the best through the 60's A classic unsung hero and a fitting tribute to a gentle man.

Fine tribute, CT.
I've searched high and low for the photo of one of his hat trick goals at Goodison.
I've asked on here and the old place but nobody seems to have it.
A shame because it's a work of art. He looks like a high hurdler, at the top of his jump, as he volleyed it home.

Great read. My dad sold the wooden hut chippy to Arthur, must have been 1980/81 by my reckoning.

I was never quite sure when he had the chippy. Must have been at the same time as he was back coaching at Burnley.

Just to put Bellamy's hat trick at Goodison in perspective, he is one of only ten Burnley players to score a hat trick in the top flight away from home.
The others are Lambie (2) Toman, Beel (3) Holden, Robson (2) Connelly (3) Pointer Lochhead & Irvine.

Irvine was the last to do it at Fulham in December 1965.

My brother kept a scrapbook from 58- 63 and has the goal you mention as well as match reports. Interestingly, I wasn't allowed to attend that game at Everton in 63 so instead went to Ewood Park where Spurs lost 7-2. We beat them by the same score at the end of the season.

Great tribute to a real 'Claret' who served the club for so long and was certainly a character.
You can guarantee that he would have entertained us had he been able to see the building as it is now.

What a lovely story,I've supported the Clarets nearly 50 years and never visited Gawthorpe,I think it's about time I paid it a visit to see Arthur's Bungalow.

Before Arthur lived there, there was a groundsman with sideburns who 'arrested us' as children, cos in those days it was trespass at Gawthorpe. Before him were the Grieves's. I think there was a tractor accident and he was blinded.

Got to know Arthur and Maureen through mutual friends...Spent a couple of New Years Eve dinners with them many years ago at the Cellar restaurant in Padiham and had dinner at Arthur and Maureens bungalow at Gawthorpe on one occasion.
Arthur was one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet.He had a wicked sense of humour but a very quiet and modest man.

In my earlier years watching the Clarets Arthur Bellamy was part of the fixtures and fittings, employed in many roles as Tony's article so clearly states. I have always had a close affinity with him if only because I was born in the same little town of Blackhill. I guess he will have loved the outdoor life he had in Burnley after living there as a young man.

He was a very, very decent player. Always added a bit of something extra, he was confident on the ball and could find a team mate. Not too far a stretch to say that Defour has something of the Bellamy about him.

Somebody once described him as a 'ball player' which I think sums it up.

Quite right that the Club has marked his lifetime contribution to BFC.

Didn't we beat Port Vale 7-0 in 1983, not 7-1?

Another torrid game must have been the 8-1 defeat at WBA in 1968/69 where Arthur scored our goal.

I suspect one person somewhere, probably someone who has worked with Arthur at Gawthorpe, came up with it.

Excellent article about a true gentleman of the game. Remember that hat trick at Everton as though it was yesterday.
