Help required from pub dwellers of Burnley

Post by Darthlaw » Wed Feb 21, 2018 3:24 pm

So a colleague has this adorning his wall which details the pubs of Bolton in a faux version of the London Underground.
Pub Stops.png
I'd like a similar copy for my office which has details of the Burnley pubs leading to the town centre but it has not been created by the website in question.

So, if you want a job doing and all that, I'm going to do it myself however I will need some help as I confess I have not appropriated all the pubs of the district of Burnley Just yet. I'm now asking the oracle that is UTC to contribute the pubs in your area so I can pin them to my map of Burnley and then draw up the 'map' afterwards.

At this point, I'm not sure whether I'm going to include working men's clubs as yet as there are so many in the town but if you can offer them up it would be appreciated.

This won't be for profit and once created, I'll happily share this with all who want a copy (alternatively maybe CT could organise those who would like a copy to make a small donation to the UTCYF?)

So if you could give me the details of your pub(s) in the following format it would be a great help:

e.g.
Area of Burnley - Padiham
Pub & Road
Hare & Hounds, Whalley Road.
Bridge Inn, Burnley Road.
etc.

This doesnt need to be a pub that you'd frequent but if I can get most of the locations then we have a chance of a reasonable looking 'map'.

I appreciate the help from everyone!

There are lots of sites on the Web that show maps of Burnley's pubs.
Google is your friend.

Google maps is proving to be useless for one but if you can point me in the direction I'd appreciate it.

Just to add, CAMRA's site misses obvious ones like the Boot and White lion in the town centre to name two! Not sure I can trust that.

Google maps is probably the best. You may find some 'lesser-known' pubs on sites such as:

https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/areas/burn ... ancashire/

Thanks for that suggestion! Not sure it covers all the ones from places out of town like Fence, clowbridge, etc but a great start!

Unfortunately Googlemaps is garbage for finding them, hence requesting 'local' knowledge.

I think we’ve move on from CMYF now. :D

Big task but not as big as it once was. You’ve mentioned the Bridge on Burnley Road. Is that the one in Clowbridge? If so it’s long gone, been a Chinese restaurant for some years now.

You mentioned Fence. I think the Bay Horse is gone now but if you go further down Wheatley Lane there’s the White Swan (Mucky Duck) and then the Sparrow Hawk.

Two pubs at Haggate are The Hare and Hounds and The Sun Inn .Then you have the Roggerham Gate Inn on Todmorden Road Roggerham.
In Harle Syke there is The Commercial and The Craven Heifer both on Briercliffe Road.
Further down Briercliffe Road there is The Baltic Fleet.

It does actually cover all 'districts' if you go to a different url:

https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/towns/burnley/lancashire/

It lists 93 pubs in the following format:

[Name] (Number And Street)
[District]

EG:
General Williams Inn, The (311 Manchester Road)
Coverage: Towneley

Bay Horse has long gone. Is the landlord of the White Swan in Wheatley Lane still the utter knobcheese who ran it in the 1990s and would refuse people entry before they'd even got through the door? I've never met such a massive bellend before or since.

Don’t think it’s the same landlord. Believe it’s more of a restaurant these days.

Sounds very like him. I went in there twice. Well, attempted to get in twice. First time I was with two other lads and we must've been 18 or 19. Managed to get a round in, then sat down in the corner having a quiet chat. Nothing too rowdy, just three lads talking. After about five minutes, the landlord appeared at the table and announced: "You won't be getting any more beers, lads. Drink up and move on." He refused to give us an explanation, so we surmised that he was just a pillock.

I tried getting in again a year later with a girlfriend, thinking he couldn't possibly have a reason to turn us away. I'd barely wiped my feet on the doormat before I heard him shout: "Not tonight, sunshine."

I imagine he's dead now. At least I hope so.

He was a former jockey. We used to go in on Friday night. He had a good selection of ales and took pride in them. My mate used to wind him up by asking for a pint of bitter. Gerry used to say "which bitter? There are 8" Then my mate would start at the left hand side of the bar and work his way along, trying all the beers. Gerry would stop him when he realised what he was doing.
One of the lads got barred. He just said "any chance of a bit of supper please landlord"
Certainly a one off but you couldn't fault the beer.

The much improved Bay Horse, also the Crooked Billet in Worsthorne, both selling cracking beers. The Kettledrum( named after a Derby winner) The Ram Inn Burnley Rd Cliviger.

Tales (and I know plenty) of the White Swan in Fence is in regard to Arthur Dcd, the landlord, who could have had a book written about him, re his like or dislike of his customers. I was always made welcome by him and his wife Barbara, although it was not a pub I frequented often. He had 13 beers on tap and I would just start at one end and carried tasting pints of each one until I'd enough, but not quite finishing all of them. When people asked him if they could have a drink his favourite beer, he said they're all my favourite. Or someone putting a log on his fire had their beer taken from them and their money returned, then barred. As he said I wouldn't walk into your house and stoke up the fire. There's many many more instances that I know of. But he was a connasuier of keeping a lot of good beer. The racing silks adorning his walls, were what he wore as an amatuer jockey

Me and my missus once went in (White Swan in Fence) and got barred before we'd barely set foot in the place. Our crime? Being bikers, apparently. The guy was a bellend.

I’ve tried to keep strictly to pubs and bars but as it’s a first draft I might add working men’s clubs too. Trouble is there so many and (to my knowledge) no resource to find them.

If we can get suggestions on here again then I’ll add them.

I like the phrase 'pub dweller'

homo sapiens > homo pub dweller > homo ?

What will the next stage of human evolution be ?

homo virtual reality dweller ?

Tony, I presume he means The Bridge in on Burnley Road in Padiham as the other 2 pubs he mentions are from there.

It was just a cheeky easter egg for those observant enough. :D

Latest (and probably last) version.

-Added The Forest at Fence.
-Extended the Over t'Ground line to connect Hapton, Padiham and Four Alls at Higham,
-Put some closed pubs on there with the Symbol (Old Red Lion, Crossed Keys) as it looked a bit sparse in the centre.
-And finally, how you all missed that I had put the Bay Horse on the wrong side of the River Brun... SHAME ON YOU!

Again, anyone who wants the PDF post your e-mail and I'll send it across. It's A3 sized so decent for an office wall.

Could you post the PDF as an attachment so we can download it rather than you having to e-mail it out to us?

Tried that. Won't accept PDF's.

I'll see if I can put a dropbox link or something.

ClaretAL - 110 Club is exactly that - a working men's club.
