You're right!!!

*Tears in eyes*!!!!

Take me home son. I want to go back to playing provincial towns, not being right good, having a bit of a **** pitch, going on away days to INTERESTING towns, seeing a brown seated "DAVID FISHWICK STAND" and not a bloody Chinese betting website anywhere!

It's only just dawned on me what we have become... Oh Lord! it's like reading back through a magazine of 90s computer games.

Was in queue at lanzarote airport talking to a Crewe fan last Saturday , that 4-0 was my memory of going to gresty rd. I was about 16 but now watching that I realise how bad we actually were. We really couldn't pass water.

Not much chance of that with SD in charge !
The old footage, from whatever era, is worth a long, hard look.

I was at a pub quiz tonight talking to a lad I taught years ago, and, boy, did I suffer in school as a Burnley fan back then, he is still a diehard Chelsea fan - from Staffordshire - and he had nothing but praise for the Clarets. His closing comment ? "I wish we had Dyche at Chelsea ."
Football, eh ? Bloody hell.

Ended up working with him and we played in a game against each other. Even though he was some time after his career (and his best) you could straight away see the the difference between a professional footballer and someone who plays for the fun of it. Not just his ability on the ball and his vision, but how physically strong he was in the tackle - and he wasn't a player known for that! Fiercely competitive in a friendly game and nearly broke my ankle with a tackle. Oh and nearly scored with a volley from the half way line!

I never thought I'd see his goal away at Watford again. It reminds me that he WAS that good.

He was never the same after his injury. Not even close. Watch that goal against Watford and he's confident, attacking, skilful and fearless.

The Smith after his injury never had that level of confidence and fearlessness which the very top players have.

It's a real shame, I think Smudger is a Premier League star somewhere in an alternative universe.

Lucky you! :D

And he was an upgrade on what we had at the time too. Think he made his debut at Luton and hadn't even been announced to the press at the time.

Stan signed him and he did make his debut at Luton (you don't need to think Rowls, you can check :D)
http://www.uptheclarets.com/players/app ... als-n-to-r" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He'd previously played in the reserves for us but I don't think they'd announced that he'd signed before the game. Same happened with Rune Vindheim when he made a debut at Man City and then the biggest surprise was turning up at Macclesfield to find John O'Kane in the team.

Reid was OK I thought. We offered him a new deal at the end of the season but then quickly withdrew it. He went to Blackpool and was a manager in Scotland for a while.

We had no idea who the neew guy warming up at Luton was but I remember coincidentally sitting next to a Scottish Claret with an encyclopedic knowledge of Scottish football.

We must have been only a handful of people in the ground who knew who the stranger was before kick off.

Of course, his name got around quickly.

I definitely heard that.

Not sure if he had one or possibly a couple of injuries. It's a great shame as he was one of the best prospects I've seen come through our youth system.

I'd put him up there with Jay, Mullin and Lafferty in terms of potential when he first came on the scene.

Great Youtube account. To see the York game from the opposite side blew my mind and the great footage of Northampton with Marriott getting mobbed. Whoever has been uploading these vids, thank you.

Should have seen that volley he hit, mentioned above. No backlift, just hit it very sweetly and somehow keeper saved it. He hit it from just inside his own half.

Fair enough! I started watching Burnley around that time. Looking back at that season's squad (1998/99), there's actually a good few players that I don't remember: Brian Reid, Ally Pickering, Michael Devenney, Kevin Henderson, Phil Eastwood, Colin Carr-Lawton and Tony Parks. I think that for the most part, they weren't household names for us so no harm done :D
