Ended up working with him and we played in a game against each other. Even though he was some time after his career (and his best) you could straight away see the the difference between a professional footballer and someone who plays for the fun of it. Not just his ability on the ball and his vision, but how physically strong he was in the tackle - and he wasn't a player known for that! Fiercely competitive in a friendly game and nearly broke my ankle with a tackle. Oh and nearly scored with a volley from the half way line!Chesterthedog wrote:Whatever happened to Paul Smith? He works as a Recruitment business partner on contracts now, slight change of career direction!Chesterthedog wrote:Whatever happened to Paul Smith? Thought he was a cracking prospect!
I never thought I'd see his goal away at Watford again. It reminds me that he WAS that good.Chesterthedog wrote:Whatever happened to Paul Smith? Thought he was a cracking prospect!
Lucky you!IndigoLake wrote:I don't remember a Brian Reid playing for us. Absolutely no memory of him!
Stan signed him and he did make his debut at Luton (you don't need to think Rowls, you can checkRowls wrote:Lucky you!
And he was an upgrade on what we had at the time too. Think he made his debut at Luton and hadn't even been announced to the press at the time.
Didn't he get injured following down a manhole ?Rowls wrote:I never thought I'd see his goal away at Watford again. It reminds me that he WAS that good.
He was never the same after his injury. Not even close. Watch that goal against Watford and he's confident, attacking, skilful and fearless.
The Smith after his injury never had that level of confidence and fearlessness which the very top players have.
It's a real shame, I think Smudger is a Premier League star somewhere in an alternative universe.
Should have seen that volley he hit, mentioned above. No backlift, just hit it very sweetly and somehow keeper saved it. He hit it from just inside his own half.Rowls wrote:I never thought I'd see his goal away at Watford again. It reminds me that he WAS that good.

Fair enough! I started watching Burnley around that time. Looking back at that season's squad (1998/99), there's actually a good few players that I don't remember: Brian Reid, Ally Pickering, Michael Devenney, Kevin Henderson, Phil Eastwood, Colin Carr-Lawton and Tony Parks. I think that for the most part, they weren't household names for us so no harm doneRowls wrote:Lucky you!
