That will hurt them more than the Aussie ban.

I got it from here

https://www.cricket.com.au/news/player- ... 2018-03-28" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

which includes:

Warner will never again be considered for any leadership position, while Smith and Bancroft must wait 12 months after serving their ban before they can be considered for a leadership role.

Twelve month bans will end in April 2019; their first test matches back (assuming the 12-month ban is the final punishment) could be the Ashes over here in 2019.

That would add a bit of spice. Let's prepare some lovely green wickets and get Smith looking like a rabbit again when the world spotlight is on him.

Come on boys. Lighten up. Ball tampering is about as severe as running on the pitch. Umpires reported it, ICC dealt with it. Surely that's got to be the end of it. Give the sinners a fair go!

OK CT, give us a list of those done for ball tampering in say the past 20 years, and tell us what their punishment was.
There will be a long list containing some rather eminent names, including English gentlemen, with punishments in the order of half their match fee.

This is very good from twitter

And Wasim used to get a bit of "assistance" as well.

TVC15 wrote:Yes I know there was massive political pressure on the Aussies to act quickly....which is good to see. But the downside is that effectively they get to try themselves and hand out their own verdict and sentences.

This is distilling how serious there cheating has been. It’s not really that different to the match fixing scandals and should be subject to ICC further investigations and sanctions / punishment.

I agree Lehmenn will go - probably today.

Little sympathy for Bancroft - he’s a grown man who knew what he was doing. The only bit of sympathy is he must have been under immense pressure to do this by the senior players and as said he is not the only bowler who was doing it - he’s just the one that got caught.
Bancroft isn't a bowler he is an opening batsman.

This is what makes the whole saga even more bizarre and still leaves many within the game suggesting a huge cover up. Why are the bowlers who bowled in the match not confirming the ball had been tampered with in fact they are doing quite the opposite and saying nothing to do with me.

I bowled a reasonable amount overs at a good standard for a few years and I would know instantly if you threw me a cricket ball if it had been tampered with or not. So why didn't these good upstanding honest Aussie bowlers inform the umpires straight away ? I can tell you why, they took one look at the ball and thought instantly cheers lads I might be able to do a bit with this!!! so in my eyes they are just as bad if not actually worse than Smith Warner and Bancroft.

Thing is Rocket I would be amazed if anybody on the Aussie team did not know this was going on....and more than this they will have been advising the likes of Bancroft and others what they need to do with the ball.

Like you say bowlers know how a ball feels and how it looks - they spend enough time examining it so will notice the minor of changes which they know is not normal wear and tear.

Their ONLY defence is that they are descended from convicts !!

I love this tweet from Michael Vaughan, and his thoughts on Warner: "Steve Smith I think is a good guy who made a huge mistake ... He needed punishing but I think this is too harsh ... Bancroft who I don’t know was led astray but deserved punishing but again too harshly IMO ... The other guy I really don’t care about ..."

People comparing this to previous ball tampering are way off the mark.

This is pre-conceived, planned cheating. It has been confirmed that it is sandpaper that was taken on to the filed of play.

The other instances where people have been charged have been more one off, one man acting alone instances using things they just happen to have with them.

Faf DuPlessis used salava for ball shining whilst chewing a mint and was also seen to rub the ball on a zip which was part of his kit. Lots of players chew mints and a lot of kit has zips on it. Atherton used dust from the pitch, which is pretty common place these days as you see bowlers at all levels rubbing their hands in the dirt etc.

These three have planned to take the sandpaper on the field and strategically placed Bancroft in a fielding position where he would regularly get hold of the ball. When caught on camera they have used a 12th man to inform Bancroft he has been spotted and he is then caught on camera stuffing the offending sand paper down his undies!!!!

That is far worse than any previous episode where someone has been caught.

Few things don't ring true for me:

1) The bowlers must have known. I don't expect them to tell the umpire but I would expect them to tell the skipper or mention it during the intervals for drinks etc.

2) Lehman is said not to have known.....well to be quite frank he should have known. It's his job to know.

3) It's almost certainly the first time they have been caught, not the first time they have done it.

4) The wicket keeper must have known....he's made skipper in the absence of Smith.

Poor from the Aussies but thankfully they have taken what sems to be appropriate action for me.

I doubt Warner will play for Oz again. He seems pretty much universally detested.

Bancroft only made his debut last November.
I would imagine W.anker wouldn't have had to put much pressure on a newby to get him to go along.
I'd imagine this is why he only got 9 months.

Wallasey CC in the Liverpool comp have cancelled Bancroft's contract for this summer.

Massive statement for a club to stop a current international coming over to play for them.

Sponsors pulling out everywhere. Magellan who sponsored the Ashes, and had a contract for all home tests have pulled out. ASICS have dropped Warner & Bancroft. Warner also dropped by LG. Smith loses Weatbix & Comonwealth Bank, both lose $2.4m of IPL money.
Qantas also considering their sponsorship.

Could be a tough time ahead for not only the 3 players, but Cricket Australia as well.

People are on tv at the moment defending the “Sandpaper 3” say they made a small error. Small?!? The financial loss is now heading north of $50m between all parties.

Been thinking or at least trying to.

Imagine you're a Megellan mid manager in the hospitality tent during the just gone Ashes series. During "prawn cocktails" you get the customers spouting "Can't you shut that ***** (Matthew Wade) up?". Later on when it's become champagne cocktails it's turned to "Is that the sort of outfit you want to associate your name with?"

Surprise, surprise, for SA, Wade is replaced by a guy who hasn't played at State level for 2 years.
Off to SA they go and the Aussie on field demeanour is more embarrassing to Aussie fans, with Warner being the most cantankerous of the lot.
Next comes the Warner attempted assault on de Kock.
Sponsors are thinking "How do we get out of this mess?"
Sandpaper and lies triggers the exodus.

I think Warner's apology was drafted by his PR people rather than heartfelt. It starts off "Mistakes have been made which have damaged cricket..." rather than being in the first person singular. He does follow up with "... I apologise for my part and take responsibility for it...".
It's not really admitting that he was the prime mover (as the "sentences" seem to reflect).
Smith does seem genuinely more contrite (though maybe just upset at all the A-dollars he's just burnt).

I still can't believe that "the leadership group" consisted of only Smith and Warner (Bancroft seems to be the new-boy stooge in it all). Two people isn't much of a group, there must've been a senior bowler or two in that group.

I can't believe there's a single person who knows anything about cricket that doesn't think that the whole team, Lehman and more of the coaching staff knew what was going on whether they were part of the planning or not.

Hopefully the sponsors pulling the plug is as much a reaction to the ACB not acknowledging this and punishing more players and coaches. It may force them into sacking Lehman and banning more guilty parties like they should have done in the first place.

The amount of people now showing sympathy for Smith because he burst into tears is embarrassing.

He even lied when he got caught because he thought it wasn’t that big of a deal.

Agreed - Hughes has appeared in three significant press conferences a) with Bancroft - highly amused by Bairstow's nut greeting. b) with Bancroft during the test - when they first owned up and obviously thought that it would be "just one of those things" and c) today's blubbering realisation that he will lose a lot of cash.

Interesting that the real villains Warner and Lehman are taking a very low profile, but it would be interesting to string those three pressers together to the tune of "Such a perfect day"

Lehmenn is showing the same arrogance and thick skin he did as a player. This is where what has been done is simply not enough.

A full blown independent investigation needs to be instigated. Interrogate all of them, rewatch footage, interview other players (including opposition) etc....at the moment they are covering things up and trying to minimise the impact on Aussie cricket.

Smith bursting into tears - aaah didums. I can only imagine that the only people feeling sorry for him are those who don’t understand cricket (or Australians !)

As for Warner - universal view that it could not have happened to a nicer fellow.

The only bit of sympathy I have got (and it’s not much) is for Bancroft. When senior players put pressure on a newbie it’s easy to see why he could go along with it. Whose to know that his place in the side did not depend on it ?

Wasn't Lehman clocked using a walkie talkie to someone on the boundary, saying words to the effect of "tell him he's been caught on camera". Now correct me if I am wrong, but if you have no knowledge of what is going on and a camera clocks a player with his hands in his pants, that is an unlikely comment to make. Tell him to stop playing pocket billiards is a more apt comment.

Yes Lehmann right to go, is ultimately responsible for much of the boorish behaviour, gamesmanship and pushing the line by the Aussies recently. His threats and encouragement to "send Broad home in tears "were appalling. Thought he had dodged a bullet but it came back to hit him. Time to rebuild the spirit of cricket now.
