Rondon offside - location of free kick?
Rondon and Brunt seemed incensed yesterday at the location of a free kick when Rondon was caught offside - so much so, Brunt took it upon himself to move the ball back just into our own half, which Mee took particular exception to.
Is it correct that the resulting free kick is taken from when Rondon first touched the ball coming from an offside position, not where he was when the ball was played to him?

Yeah, prettt much.
Used to be where the player was when 1st offside the free kick was taken. I'm sure rules changed so it was where that player 1st touched the ball/affected play where the free kick is now taken.

I believe so, even if it’s in their own half. I think it’s ridiculous and should go back to the place they were offside in the first place when the ball is played forwards

thought so. So why are some professional players not aware of this change of rule?

Re: Rondon offside - location of free kick?
Rules changed last summer I think. Can recall us being on the receiving end earlier in the season (Vokes the culprit), but on that occasion our players knew the rule even if the fans didn't.
One of the highlights of the game actually. Seeing the west Brom fans contort themselves in anger because they didn't know the rules was entertaining enough, but seeing professional footballers who have no doubt been in rules briefings going ballistic was so entertaining that even the ref was laughing. Doesn't say much for WBA's professionalism.

Re: Rondon offside - location of free kick?
Rule was changed to stop players cynically playing the ball in more dangerous areas to break the momentum of an attack/period of pressure when they clearly started offside. It can look a bit odd, but it's a good response to gamesmanship that the players have brought upon themselves.

First time it happened on the Turf was early last season in the 2-0 win against Watford. The crowd reacted and referee Mike Jones could be seen on camera laughing at the lack of knowledge at the rule change which was brought in for Euro 2016 in June of that year.
When it became clear yesterday where he was giving the free kick, I said that there would be a crowd reaction, and there was. But I couldn't believe Rondon and Brunt. Do their players not even know the laws of the game. And quite how Brunt was not yellow carded for his actions is beyond me.

Not many did but what is incredible is that the crowd still react after nearly two years. But I was stunned at the players not knowing yesterday.bfccrazy wrote:I remember the Watford game when it happened because I was one of those people who didn't know the rule change then

The commentators were as bad, laughing at the referee’s ineptitude that an offside free kick was being taken in the wrong half!!

It’s such a stupid rule I can forgive people for not knowing it. I think it’s illogical

Re: Rondon offside - location of free kick?
It was a random rule change but I like the fact it punishes an offside more - a player could waste time by being offside and holding the game up by being up front - this way if the player then runs back and touches the ball ..... the defending team then gets a more dangerous free kick further up the pitch.Roosterbooster wrote:It’s such a stupid rule I can forgive people for not knowing it. Whether the rule is a good one or a bad one, it's been in place since June 2016 so you would have hoped at least that the players understood it.Roosterbooster wrote:It’s such a stupid rule I can forgive people for not knowing it. I think it’s illogical
Re: Rondon offside - location of free kick?
Not being a pedant but isn't it the place where they touched the ball or where he deemed offside. As if going forward and he was offside and chased the ball into the corner then touched it wouldn't the free kick be where he became offside not where he touched it?. Think there was an example yesterday where ball was brought back.

Re: Rondon offside - location of free kick?
If you were using deliberate offside as a time wasting tactic surely you would stand offside have the ball pumped into the furthest corner and then play it just before it goes out of play?
I can remember players being booked for this in the distant past, ungentlemanly conduct.

Was quite funny how many people didn't actually know the rules.
Nothing looks more silly than peole screaming in hysterics at something they think is wrong, when it's actually thrm who are wrong...

Re: Rondon offside - location of free kick?
This was a highlight of the game for me. Like many on here i recalled the Watford game and remember going mental myself at where the free kick was taken until somebody told me the new rule..bizarre as it is.
I was sat about 6 seats away from the West Brom fans and as i looked across and along my row a West Brom fan looked squarely at me and i smiled and shook my head mouthing "its right"..he looked at me and said "Eh? Its ****ing offside! How can it be there?" I just shrugged my shoulders and laughed.

Re: Rondon offside - location of free kick?
On both occasions (yesterday and the Watford game) I had to explain to fans around me that this was the new rule. I sympathise with many fans not being aware of this rule change but goodness me, if you’re a professional footballer playing in one of the richest leagues in the world, you ought to know these rules - especially some 2 years after they were brought in!
How the hell Brunt wasn’t yellow carded for that I don’t know - a complete lack of bottle from the referee. Had he kicked the ball away, he’d have booked him. Pathetic.
