Have you ever 'put in a shift' when playing football?

Do you think Pele ever did?

Played full back for a team and the rest were so bad, in the second half I literally played striker and right back and got our first shot on target. That was certainly a shift and a half. The manager still cried and had a go at me, even though the opposing manager gave me man of the match.

I always did.

Sean Dyche would have loved me, if I was better player that is.

Yes. Always gave more than required.

Even coming across to chop down an oppo striker who had danced around the rest of the team.

Nah. I made Berbatovs workrate look like Boyds. I was an artist on the ball. I couldn't be sapping my energy levels running about.

No, but certainly dodged a shift or two to go and watch the Clarets.

Nipped out from work to play up at Belvedere on a Sat. afternoon, my boss wanted to know what I was doing with mud in my ear so that was a bit like playing footy when I should have been doing a shift!

No wonder - he was probably pulling his hair out at your lack of discipline for your position ;)

Thought I was out the door when I was on the opening credits for our semi at Newcastle.
A job I loved and needed. It made me think twice about doing it again.

Those who have played with me regularly asked if I had a third lung to get through the amount of work I got through on a football pitch.

I'm more of the type of footballer who used to drift in an out of a match. I was never anywhere in the huff and puff of the first twenty minutes of each half and then started to function once the match had waxed and waned a bit and then I came into my stride at the finale.

I have played in football matches, though where I felt like I had to be all eleven players for the whole match because the rest of the team were so inept and without much of an interest.

I played left midfield, although right footed, I could cross and shoot with both. I have to admit I was really fit and would go box to box, so yes I put in a shift with overtime :)

I am heading out to 'do a shift' in my walking football session in a few minutes. 75 minutes strenuous workout playing either defence or my more natural striker position. Some ex pros play in this session and they are still a class above anyone I ever played against all those years ago when I played normal football.

Went and played the worst I have ever done either in walking or normal football. 5-a-side round robin lost 2-6, 1-3 & 0-7. Couldn't pass straight, shoot straight, tackle and then conceded 3 goals in a minute when I took my stint in goal! Atrocious doesn't begin to describe my performance

Played against Fiji national side when I was out there with the Navy in 1970 , our team comprised of a rag tag and bobtail gang that had spent the day before in the watering holes of Suva , was a good game , Fiji won 2-1 , happy days .
