Fair enough but what's to stop someone breaking away if they feel fit enough....Caernarfon_Claret wrote:Same reason as at The Tour de France.
Essentially they're all knackered after 3 gruelling weeks and it gives them a chance to enjoy the occasion.

Re: Chris Froome
Over the years it’s become a gentleman’s agreement that you don’t attempt to challenge, but in practical terms the chances of taking a meaningful advantage on a relatively short, flat stage are so remote there’s little point in bothering anyway. The only thing riding hard might do is increase the chances of an accident, but taking the leader’s jersey in such circumstances is also considered a no-no.

As far as the race leaders are concerned, that’s exactly what it is. For the sprinters, there’s a still a prestigious stage victory to race for.

Re: Chris Froome
It would be different if the gap were a handful of seconds - then they would be able to compete as that may be possible to obtain especially with time bonuses on the line and during the stage.
The last day is a prestige day for the sprinters - they have gone through the hell of the mountains and this is the reward a chance to be first on the last day in the big city - it ranks very high in a sprinter's palmares

Yeah, chances of the sprinter's teams letting a breakaway go is absolutely zero.scouseclaret wrote:Over the years it’s become a gentleman’s agreement that you don’t attempt to challenge, but in practical terms the chances of taking a meaningful advantage on a relatively short, flat stage are so remote there’s little point in bothering anyway. There will be somebody go for it but it’s purely to show the jersey, for advertising purposes. Viviani will probably win his fifth stage in the bunch sprint but I’ll be cheering on Sam Bennett to his third stage win.

Just catching up on the highlights of the final stage.
Unbelievable! How can the organisers come up with a course that is then deemed unsafe? I know the final stage is irrelevant to the GC but this is ridiculous.
